ABSTRAK
Skripsi ini berjudul “Translation Methods of Personifications and Methapors in
Are You Afraid of Dark by Sidney Sheldon into Apakah Kau Takut Gelap.”
Skripsi ini menganalisis metode terjemahan yang digunakan dalam penerjemahan
majas personifikasi dan metapora dalam novel Sidney Sheldon yang berjudul Are
You Afraid of Dark yang diterbitkan oleh Warner Book Inc. Pada tahun 1993 ke
dalam Bahasa Indonesia Apakah Kau Takut Gelap oleh Gita Yuliani Koesbaroto
yang diterbitkan oleh Gramedia Pustaka Utama pada tahun 2005. Data yang ada
diidentifikasikan menurut teori metode penerjemahan dari Newmark (1988 : 5) yaitu
: word – for- word translation, (literal translation), faithful translation, semantic
translation, adaptation translation, free translation, idiomatic translation and

communicative translation. Jumlah data yang dianalisis adalah sebanyak 42 data
(32 personifikasidan 10 metapora). Dari penelitian yang dilakukan, metode yang
paling dominan digunakan dalam penerjemahan majas personifikasi adalah
communicative translation, yaitu sebanyak 12 personifikasi (37,5 %). Untuk
metapora, metode yang paling dominan digunakan adalah word – for- word
translation, yaitu sebanyak 4 metapora. Dan untuk kedua majas tersebut, metode
yang paling dominan digunakan dalam penerjemahannya adalah communicative
translation yaitu sebanyak 15 majas (35,7 %).

ABSTRACT

This thesis entitled “Translation Methods of Personifications and Methapors in
Are You Afraid of Dark by Sidney Sheldon into Apakah Kau Takut Gelap.” This
thesis analyzing the translation methods used in translating personifications and
methapors in the novel Are You Afraid of Darkby Sidney Sheldon, published by
Warner Book Inc. in 1993 into Indonesian Language Apakah Kau Takut Gelap by

Gita Yuliani Koesbaroto published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2005. The theory
of Newmark (1988 : 45) is applied to analyze the methods applied in translating
personifications and methapors. The translation methods that proposed by
Newmarkare : word – for- word translation, literal translation, faithful translation,
semantic translation, adaptation translation, free translation, idiomatic translation and
communicative translation. The number of collected data are 42 data (32
personifications and 10 methapors). From the research that has been done, the most
dominant method used in translating personifications is communicative translation at
the number of 12 personifications (37,5%). The most dominant method used in
translating methapors is word – for – word translation at the number of 4 data (40%).
Both of personification and methapor, the most dominant method used is
communicative translation at the number 15 data (35,7%).
