Biomass Gasification Technology
One of the best options of Off-Grid RE.
Most relevant at the level we are looking at.
Wide range of power generation systems
available right from 10-kWe to 1.6-Mwe
levels.
Can use different available Biomass / agriresidues that are available in the specific
rural areas.
What is Biomass Gasification?
What is Gasification?
Gasification is conversion of various
biomasses to a combustible (something
that can be burnt) gas called Producer
Gas.
This gas can then be burnt in Engine
Gensets to produce electricity or can be
used for process heat applications.

Applications
Hot Air Generators
Dryers
Boilers
Thermic Fluid Heaters
Ovens
Furnaces & Kilns
Modes of Power Generation
1. Dual Fuel Mode (Fuel = Diesel + Biomass)
Uses a Diesel engine genset.
60-75% of diesel replacement
Typical consumption of about 5 – 6 kgs of rice husk or
about 4 kgs of woody biomass for each litre of diesel
saved.
Sensible, if and only if diesel mode operation is
practiced.
2. 100% Gas Mode (Fuel = Only Biomass)
Uses a Producer Gas engine genset.
Need 1.3 kgs of wood/ 2 kgs of rice husk to generate 1
unit of electricity.
Environmental Aspects
Water
Air
Used in re-circulation mode with
zero discharge. Occasional ph
adjustment and simple treatment
may be needed.
Gasifier does not release gas to the
atmosphere.
Combustion in user equipments
(connected to gasifier) is much
cleaner compared to liquid fuels
Environmental Aspects(contd.)
Solid
Waste
Noise
Charcoal can be used for any thermal
heat application.
Biological ash can be returned to the
soil
In case of major user equipment i.e.
genset, noise level is lower than with
100% liquid fuels.
Biomass materials contain negligible Sulphur
The Ideal Models
Set up multiple small systems of 11-kWe and 40-kWe level
ratings for Rural Electrification with Centralized control and
monitoring if required.
Set up 200-kWe or higher level Off-Grid power plants
Use locally available wastes / agri-residues
Provide / Sell Power to Communities / Private Industries /
Utilities
Generate high energy, high value charcoal & biochar as byproduct
Features of ‘Ankur’ Plug & Play
systems

Cluster be it for Rural Electrification, Islands &
also for Telecom Towers)

‘Ankur Plug & Power - Features
A ready to install system for any remote site
Reduces local site works, which otherwise is
a challenge for remote sites
Multiple systems could thus be installed very
quickly at various locations
System could be basic or highly automated
‘Ankur’ Plug & Power - Features
Automated system includes :
Auto-start & stop control to avoid human
intervention
Auto-Sequence control ensures smooth start-up
shutdown and protection as well
PLC based control logic
Monitoring of Generator Voltage, Current, Power,
Frequency and power factor
Alarm annunciation for faults
‘Ankur’ Plug & Power - Automated system
with Remote Management & Control
Remote Management & Control
features
Anytime, Anywhere access of all the plant parameters
through secured gateway
Centralized monitoring and control for different Power
Stations located at different geographical locations
Remote control of plant operation and tuning of critical
parameters through secure access
Historical Record of each configured parameter for the
desired period

The Benefits
Generate Green, Clean and Renewable electricity
Wealth from Waste
Large-Scale Employment Generation
More Equitable distribution of incomes & employment
Great boost to Rural Entrepreneurship
Positive Impact on migration to urban areas
Unlike other technologies, 70-80% of the revenue returns to
the local economy
Charcoal could be sold or given to local villagers for
cooking. Biochar could be given to the farmers as fertilizer
Excellent CSR model
