ABSTRACT

The Process of Individuation of Santiago in Coelho’s The Alchemist : A Jungian Archetypal

Approach

  Licco Puji Arianto As

Abstract: “The Alchemist” is one of the great novels of Paulo Coelho’s. It is a novel that contains dreams, symbols, signs, and adventures. They are the echo of ancient wise voices.

The novel is the tale of Santiago, an Andalucian shepherd boy who has a dream and the courage to follow his dream. Santiago ventures from his homeland Spain to North Africa in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids in Egypt. By following his dreams, the symbols and signs given during the adventure, Santiago finally can find his personal myth. There are some symbols that can be found in the novel that will affect the major character, Santiago. For example, the Alchemist itself is not only a profession of a person who experts on alchemy, but here it is symbol of vision and hope that represent some supporting characters, such as the King and the Old wise man. At the end, they influence on the character development of the major character.

  The Alchemist

is a lovely novel full of optimism, hope and vision. It is a kind of novel that encourages readers that eveything is possible in this world as long as the human being really want it to happen. From the beginning the writer chose this novel because this novel talks about dreams, adventures, and heroism, which the writer always admires from a story. The approach used in this thesis is Jungian’s Archetypal Approach that is the theory of Persona, Shadow, Hero, God and the Self. Further more, the writer used the result of Jungian’s Archetypal Approach to analyze the process of individuation of the major character in the novel, Santiago. By Jungian Archetypal Approach, it is can be seen that the major character is influenced strongly by those archetypes and it brings effect on his character’s development. On a whole, this thesis describes and gives proofs of how the major character experiences his process of individuation

ABSTRAK

Proses Individu dari Tokoh Santiago di dalam Novel : “The Alchemist” / “Sang Alkemis” :

Menggunakan Pendekatan Jungian Archetypal.

  Licco Puji Arianto As

Abstrak: “The Alchemist” / “Sang Alkemis” adalah salah satu novel luar biasa hasil

karya novelis Paulo Coelho.
