PART A: READING (15 MARKS)
Read the text below and answer all the questions in the answer booklet.
I

Malaysian archeology has been making interesting discoveries about our Stone
Age residents. The Stone Age can be divided into three periods. First,

the

Paleolithic (or early Stone Age) period covered the period from 35,000 to 60,000
years ago; then came the period covering 10,000 - 35,000 years ago which was
named the Mesolithic (or Middle Stone Age) period. The third and final Stone

5

Age period stretched between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago and was termed the
Neolithic (or New Stone Age) period.

II

Paleolithic inhabitants of Malaysia recognized no fixed borders and had no
known government, religion or currency. Its people probably were descendents
of the first group of humans to come out of Africa. The descendents of these

10

early settlers still live in the hills of Malaysia and in settlements in the jungle near
towns; many have joined the urban communities of Malaysia to become part of
trie country's diverse urban population. During the Mesolithic period, another
gtoup, the Proto-Malays sea travelers, migrated from Yunnan in China to
Malaysia. With their arrival, the Orang Asli, such as the Negritos, were compelled

15

to flee into the hills. During this period, people learned to clothe themselves, to
cook and to hunt with advanced stone weapons. Communication techniques also
improved. Later, during the Neolithic Age, people learned to build simple houses
and to live in larger communities. Simple moral and simple society concepts
20

began to develop.
III

We have limited knowledge of what prehistoric life was like in what is now
Malaysia. Some stone tools found at Bukit Jawa in Lenggong Perak have been
found to be 200,000 years old. However, the oldest human skeleton in peninsula
Malaysia from the Stone Age , now called Perak Man, dates back 11,000 years.
Another skeleton, that of a female, has been determined to be 8,000 years old.

Both were found in Lenggong. As Perak Man's body was buried in a cave in a

foetal* position and accompanied by his stone tools, he was probably a
respected and important member of his tribe. He was about 157 centimeters tall
and probably aged between 40-50 when he died. His left hand was found to be
damaged by disease and a finger was deformed. Remnants of tools and food

30

such as shells and animal bones were found in the cave as well. The cave, which
is called Gua Gunung Runtuh today, was high up in a hill. Other caves situated
much lower have yielded archeological remains such as stone tools and food
remnants but no more skeletons. These caves were probably used as temporary
shelters during hunting whereas Gua Gunung Runtuh was used as a more

35

permanent, safer and a long-term place to stay.

IV

Perak Man's skeleton was found in 1991. In the years that followed, more
exciting discoveries were made. In 2001, Malaysian archeologists announced to
the world that they had found in Lenggong the largest untouched early Stone Age
settlement dating back 20,000 to 30,000 years. It has now the distinction of being

40

the earliest known human settlement in South East Asia, complete with
workshops for making Stone Age pebble tools.

V

In 2010, Malaysian archeologists announced that they had found the skeletal
remains of a youth estimated to be between 8,000 - 11,000 years old in the
Bewah Cave in the Kenyir Lake area in Terengganu. The find was the second

45

skeletal remains discovered in the Kenyir lake area, the first being in the Batu
Tok Bidan Cave in 1975. DNA samples from the remains of the latest find were
sent to the United States and the Malaysians are hoping their latest discovery will
bear exciting information. Pieces of pottery believed to date back to the Neolithic
period were also found in the vicinity of the youth's skeleton. Among the pottery

50

were some which resemble rock painting at Neolithic Age sites elsewhere in the
country. The state authorities have decided to keep the artifacts in glass cases
for public viewing at the site. However, the cave itself has been closed to the
public for further excavation. The Tasik Kenyir area is now an area of great

interest to Malaysian archeologists.

Similarly, important discoveries in the Semporna peninsula in Sabah revealed the
area as a former population hub and huge pottery-making hub which existed
between 2,000 and 3,000 years ago. Experts realized that the people here had
had contacts with other lands when they found that volcanic crystals in the
pottery designs came from an island in the Pacific 3,500 miles away. Another site 60
in Lahad Datu has been estimated to be 100,000 years old based on the stone
tools found there. Heritage Commissioner Datuk Professor Zuraina Majid
enthused, "We are filling in the whole prehistoric sequence as we progress in our
research, adding to the knowledge of early man here...All this makes Sabah a
lively hub of previously unknown activity in the South East Asian region."

VII

65

Perhaps all this will enable us to look at our land with renewed wonder and to
consider the Orang Asli and Proto Malays with far more respect. It is only
befitting that their heritage be discovered and treasured.
