ABSTRACT

STEVIA DESCARENZA. C1307022. 2013. The Use of Code Switching by
the Biology teacher of VII i class of SMPN 4 Surakarta (A Sociolinguistics
Approach). Thesis: English Department, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts,
Sebelas Maret University.
The research is based on Sociolonguistics study. The aims of the
research are to describe the forms of code switching committed by the Biology
teacher of VII i class of SMPN 4 Surakarta, and to explain the motives that
become the backgrounds of code switching committed by the Biology teacher
of VII i class of SMPN 4 Surakarta.
This research employs descriptive qualitative method. The data are
taken from the recording in the learning and teaching activity of Biology class
in the VII i class of SMPN 4 Surakarta and the interview with Miss Poncowati,
the Biology teacher of VII i class of SMPN 4 Surakarta.
In describing the forms of code switching, this research uses Poplack
Theory. Moreover, the research explains the motives that become the
backgrounds of code switching committed by the Biology teacher of VII i class
of SMPN 4 Surakarta.
The findings of the research show that there are three forms of code
switching committed by the Biology teacher of VII i class of SMPN 4
Surakarta. They are intersentential code switching, intrasentential code

switching, and tag switching.
The second finding is that there are fourteen motives that become the
backgrounds of code switching in delivering the lesson by the Biology teacher
of VII i class of SMPN 4 Surakarta. The motives are: to clarify the information
which is previously given in English form, to remind the students about
previous material, to give strong emphasis on a word/ words and its meaning to
the students, to make sure to the students the information that she will deliver is
important, to confirm, to make the students able to achieve her explanation in
both Indonesian and English language, to emphasize to the students that the
time is over and the lesson will end, to make sure to the students whether or not
they have questions, to end certain material and to continue to the next material,
agreement, repetition, to conduct informal conversation with the students, to
use the term in English version, and to use the term in Indonesian version.
