Abstract
Monolingual approach remains controversy for more than decades in the field of
Second Language Acquisition. Along with the perception that the mother tongue can give
advantages or disadvantages for EFL learners, this study was conducted to investigate
students’ language preference in Basic Grammar classes and the reasons for such language
preference which took place in the English Department, Satya Wacana Christian University.
It was a quantitative study which involved 120 students. The data collected through
questionnaire. Two major findings were found, the first finding was the students preferred
‘English only’ and ‘Dominant English’ in majority. The second was the four main reasons
why they chose such preferences, i.e. English as the major study, to make them accustomed
with English, understanding difficult material and to avoid miss-interpretation term.
Pedagogical implications of the finding will be addressed at the end of the paper.
Key words: the mother tongue, the target language, EFL learners, language preference
