This research was aimed to improve students’ involvement in reading class through
interactive activities technique. It used classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted at
VIII A Grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Sumbang in academic year 2010/ 2011 as the subject of the research. The number of the students was 38 students comprised of 22 males and 16 females. This study was done from February until July 2011.
The writer worked collaboratively with the English teacher in the class. The Classroom Action Research was carried out based on the Kemmis and Taggart design. The writer took two cycles with two actions in each cycle. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the writer used observation, questionnaire, reading test, interview, and documentation.
The result of the data observation showed that the average of students ’ involvement in cycle 1 was 29.9%, and the average of students involvement in cycle 2 was 71.30%, so the improvement from cycle 1 to cycle 2 was 42.1%. It has reached the criterion of the indicator success which was 40 %. It was supported by the improvement of test result and questionnaire result. The average of the test result from cylce 1 was 63.28, and cycle 2 was 68.85. So the improvement from cycle 1 to cycle 2 was 5.57. The questionnaire result showed that the students gave the positive response toward the teaching reading and learning process using interactive activities technique. It showed that from 10 available questions, there was more than 70% of students’ answer interested using interactive activities in reading class. Then, from the interview result, there was almost all students who gave positive response and showed that the students felt happy, enthusiatic and motivated in teaching learning process. Based on the data above interactive activities technique was able to improve students’ involvement in reading class.
