English Skill Guide to ability in both written and spoken in English

Locating Jobs
JOBS CAN BE found in various ways. Job finders have to
do the following things:
l. Enquire from relatives and friends if they are aw~e
of any job
openings in their place of work or elsewhere.
2. Ask former colleagues (if you have worked before).
3. Watch advertisements on shop windows and notice boards in ·
shopping complexes and other public places.
4. Look for vacancies in newspapers which are widely circulated.
5. Write applications to organizations that you think have
vacancies for people of your qualifications and experience.
6. See the yellow pages of telephone directories to locate firms
which may employ people like you.
7. Contact prospective employers on the phone, or personally.
8. Register with an employment agency.
Various studies have been done to find out how people find
jobs. There are a number of ways to approach this topic, and many
of the studies don't come up with the same data. One of the
biggest surveys of unemployed people is part of the Current
Population Survey. The Census Bureau gives this survey to
thousands of U.S. households on a regular basis. The survey asks
the employment status of those surveyed and, if unemployed,
what job search methods were used by them. Unfortunately, the
survey does not ask which approaches worked.
On one occasion, special questions were added to the survey
that asked which job search techniques resulted in the unemployed
linding thcir most recent job. At that time, the two most effective
11H.:lhods were contacting an employer directly and getting leads
i"nlill II"icnd s or relatives. Since then , a variety of studies have

En )l. li:ih Sk ill

(~ lIi dc

I

~

been done on how people find jobs, but none surveyed as large a
group.
One study conducted by the u.s. Department of Labor,
titled "Job seeking on the Internet," included data on those using
the Internet in their job search. Once again, though, they did not
measure the effectiveness of the Internet in landing a job. So,
based on the available research on how people actually find jobs,
the following data present the major techniques. These figures are
approximate, but they are supported by a variety of research
findings.
• Heard about opening from someone they know (including
friends, relatives, and acquaintances): 35%
• Contacted employer directly: 30%

• Answered a want ad: 14%
• Referred by private employment agency: 6%
• Referred by the public employment service: 5%
• Other methods (referred by school, took civil service test,
referred by union, placed ads in journals, and so on): 10%
We know that some people are getting their jobs from leads
they obtain on the Internet. Each method listed here most likely
includes job seekers who used the Internet. For example, of those
who "contacted an employer directly" to get their jobs, some
mailed in a resume, and others knocked on the door, completed an
application, used the phone, or made an Internet contact of some
kind. People use the Internet as another tool in their job search.
Some Internet users go directly to an employer's site and submit
their resumes online. Others use e-mail to contact people they
know and ask for job leads. Still others go to Internet resume
banks or sites listing openings and then post their resumes or
search for jobs.
T.he ,following situations are given to guide you through
finding jobs. They also give you an idea of the sort of things that
job seekers can expect in their quest for jobs.
