ABSTRACT

The aim of this research is to find out whether or not retelling story technique is effective in teaching speaking in the eleventh grade students of MA Negeri

  th rd

Purwokerto 1 in academic year 2011/2012. It was conducted on 18 until 23 of June 2012 in MA Negeri Purwokerto 1. The subjects of this research were XI IPS 3 as the experimental class and XI IPS 4 as the control class. Two classes were taught. The experimental class was taught by using retelling story technique, and the control class was taught by using question-answer technique.

Before the classes were given the treatment, pre-test was given to find out the students’ competence. After the treatment, the students were given post test to know the students’ competence.

The data were analyzed by using t-test. The result of t-test was consulted to t- table. The result of t-test was 5. 30 and t-table was 2. 01. It means that t-test result was higher than t-table (5. 30 > 2. 01), and there was a possitive effect of retelling story technique in teaching speaking. Thus, the hypotesis that retelling story technique was effective in teaching speaking in the eleventh grade students of MA Negeri Purwokerto 1 was accepted.
