CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Language has played an important role in many aspects of human live.
Using language people can express their ideas, transfer information or
message. Language is also used to realize every person’s hopes, aspiration and
thinking. As a means of communication it is very useful and flexible which
can serve the human needs in their communication in any situation. There are
international languages, namely English, French, Japan and German. Of the
international languages, English is most widely used in the world.
Since it is an international language, English is taught as a compulsory
subject in Indonesia. It is learned by students of play group, kindergarten,
elementary school, junior high school, senior high school and university.
Indonesia students are expected to comprehend English as well as Indonesian
language. The government hopes that the students in Indonesia can use
English in speaking with their friends or perhaps with foreigners fluently.
There are number of state schools and private schools that are built in
Surakarta. Because of that, there are competitions in quality and benefit
between one school and the others. And there are a lot of schools promoting
the good quality, facilities and promising good quantity program in teaching
learning process to the students.

Few senior high schools in Surakarta open language program besides
social and MIPA program. One of them is Pangudi Luhur Saint Joseph Senior
High School. This is a private school under Pangudi Luhur institution.
Language program was opened on the third grade, but when the curriculum
was changed into Competence Based Curriculum language program began
from the second grade. Each grade consists of one class language program.
This language program gives many languages to study, namely: English,
German, Japan and Arabic. This program is supported with English laboratory
too.
Teacher is supposed to be creative in developing their teaching methods
to create good atmosphere, improve the students’ speaking skill and make the
English lesson more exciting. One of the big questions in any English
teachers’ head is “how do we develop our students’ speaking skill?”
Lado in Diller (1971) argued that language teaching should aim at
making students speak the language. So, teacher should be creative to choose
the way to increase students speaking skill. There are some micro skills of
speaking, namely telling story, presentation, delivering speech, discussion,
mastering ceremony, and conference. One of the ways to develop speaking
skill is by presentation. Josef Essberger (1996) defines that presentation is a

short talk by one person to group of people introducing and describing a
particular subject (for example: a new product, company figures or a proposed
advertising campaign). It means that presentation can build students speaking
development.
