Soccer brings the world together.
As a Soccer lover since my early childhood, I have always been
fascinated by the power of this sport. I have played a lot of soccer,
watched and cheered for my favorites and after constant years of
being a die hard fan of this beautiful game, I have come to a
conclusion that the most popular sport in the world with over 3 billion
fans has the power to unite people, overcome ethnic, geographic,
religious and social boundaries and even unite a nation.
History itself tells us that soccer has helped overcome and spread
messages of peace in the past. The symbolic moment of peace known
as the “Christmas Truce” which happened in 1914 during World War I is
the perfect example of how the beautiful game unites nations and in
this case two nations at war: German and Britain. This is the day when
the two sides at war made a spontaneous peace and played soccer. A
German lieutenant Kurt Zehmisch during the war, said that “Thanks to
soccer and Christmas, the feast of love, deadly enemies briefly came
together as friends”. Events such as the Christmas truce indicate that
there is no sports that can be compared with the magnitude of impact
that soccer has in uniting people . If this doesn’t sum up what soccer
can do to bring people together, there is no other strong example to
describe how important of a sport it is.
The beauty of such a sport as Football is that it can garner a sense of
camaraderie between fans. Even with all the problems and disputes
going on in a country, people come together when their country is on
the world cup. And even if their country is not on the international
platform, they cheer for country in the same continent. It is the sport
that gets strangers in a stadium or even a small bar high fiving and
hugging each other. People from different parts and countries of the
world have a common topic to discuss passionately just because they
cheer and are a fan of the same club.
The world cup is the most powerful soccer event that unites entire
population and brings peace in the world even if it is just for a little
while. We put aside the differences between the political parties we
support for, the judgments we root for and come together to share a
common interest, to enjoy a sport we all love and root for our country.
Entire nations shut down and people all around the world dramatically
alter their schedules during world cup.
Soccer is now such a massive part of the present world as it pulls it
together. As Franz Beckenbauer, the former player and German football
coach and manager; “Football is impartial, apolitical and universal.
Football unites people around the world everyday. Young or old, players
or fans, rich or poor. The game makes everyone equal, stirs the
imagination, makes people happy and makes people sad.”
