CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
In this modern era, information is very essential. Thus, everyone has to
exchange it with other people. One way to do this is by using language. It happens
for it is the common way to exchange information, and people accept it
exceedingly. Presently, English language is used as international language. By
using English language, you can communicate with almost every person on this
planet. Thus, every nation has to learn English language properly because English
is an essential element to international communication.
In order to master English language, a person has to be a qualified person
who can understand English structure and grammar thoroughly because structure
and grammar are essential in making a sentence. Still, as we find in our daily life,
English language is a very complicated language for some people. To counter this
problem, translation can be used as a solution. Catford (1965, in Hartono,
2003:11) argues that translation is the replacement of textual material in one
language (source language) by equivalent of textual material in another language
(target language). Thus, by using translation, it can assist people to learn English
language.

As a bridge of information, translation has massive contribution in many
aspect of our life. In education sector, translation is one of teaching method,
which can help students to learn English language gradually. In cultural sector,
translation helps people understand and respect of each country’s culture. And in
tourism sector, translation contributes to introduction of beautiful tourism places
to tourists from different countries. The three sectors above are a few example of
the contribution of translation in our life. Thus, translation is necessary in our life
due to it can help us to reach better understanding in learning English.
In translation’s work, a translator has to speculate some aspects. As effect,
translation’s work is not a simple task to do. To cope this, a lingual intelligence,
precision, grammatical mastery and adaptability in investigating semantic are
conditions that have to be fulfilled by a translator. Likewise, translation procedure
and its attitude must be contemplated by translator for the accuracy of
translation’s meaning is its main intention. Therefore, a good translation can be
achieved by considering some aspects of translation activity.
By speculating the importance and complexity of translation in daily life,
translation has been introduced to students. This phenomenon only occurs in high
level such as university student’s level, for example, English department of
university of Muhammadiyah Malang. In this campus, especially in English
department, translation knowledge is delivered to students into three stages. First
stage is introduction I. This stage is prepared for the fifth semester students.
Introduction here means as discussing translation only from its cover. In other
words, this stage delivers general knowledge of translation and to determine

students’ interest and skill in translation. Second stage is introduction II. As in the
previous stage, in here students are provided with basic knowledge of translation
but with more detail. This stage is only for the sixth semester students. Finally, the
last stage is training. The seventh semester students are the participants in this
stage. After all preparations which have been provided in introduction II, students
are expected to master it and practice it in order to be a superb translator. To
achieve this, students are divided into some groups of translation bureau where
they have to prepare all preparations like a real translation bureau. The preparation
starts from deciding name and place for bureau, structural organization,
advertisements, and the price. By making and running this bureau, students are
expected to learn and gain actual experience as a real translator.
Considering various orders in every language, a translator should search the
applicable method in translating certain text. Specific variety of text needs proper
method associated to translation concept, and it has its own style and difficulties.
Thus, a translator has to transfer full information in the source text consistently
and logically by recognizing its characteristic. Therefore, an excellent translation
can be achieved by considering text characteristic and appropriate translation
method.
By considering the complexity and the importance of translation, here the
writer is eager to conduct a thesis by choosing the title: “Translation Methods
used by Translation II Students in Running Translation Bureau Job Training.”

1.2 Problem Statements
In this study, the writer formulates two problems related that happen in translation
bureau job training. These problems are displayed below:
What is the most translation method dominantly used by Translation II
students in running translation bureau job training?
What kinds of translation error do the Translation II students make in running
translation bureau job training?
1.3 Purpose of the Study
After formulating the problems, the writer aims to achive the answers related
to the problem in this study. The aims are:
To identify the most dominant translation method used by Translation II
students in running translation bureau job training.
To know the kinds of translation error made by Translation II students in
running translation bureau job training.
1.4 Significance of the Study
From this study, the writer hopes that this study can contribute to linguistics’
studies, translation subject precisely. Moreover, the writer expects that this study
will assist people, both in specific and general purposes.
The First point is supporting in special purposes or academic teaching. By
reading this study, it can help students of English department, especially in
University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Besides the students, the writer expects that
this study can assist translation lecturers to counter the translation errors in the
future, for example, by providing experts paradigms about translation theories,

translation product (text), and translation errors analysis.
By reading and
understanding this study, the students can improve their translation knowledge and
translation lecturers can improve their students’ achievement, especially in
translation method.
The Second point is supporting in general purpose or non-academic way.
Except students of university level, the writer also aims to provide support for every
person who wants to learn translation. The reason is everyone can master
translation. Machali (2009:188) argues that if a person has exceptional bilingual
language ability, thus he has a brilliant asset to be a translator and determine
whether to attend translation education (university) or not. Hopefully, by reading
this study, the reader can adjust their translation knowledge, specifically in
translation method. To achieve this, translation experts’ theories, translation
product (text), and translation error, especially for translation method are given
throughout this study.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
In discussing translation, it will take long time to study full body of
translation. As another linguistic subject, every subject has their advance level to
study. Thus, the writer decides only to analyze translation method and translation
error found in Indonesian-English translation. The translation error is limited to
tenses error (simple present and simple past) and meaning (contextual meaning).
The target of this study is translation bureaus ran by Translation II students of
English department of Teacher Training and Education of the University of
Muhammadiyah Malang. By considering the time and cost, it is impossible to

make all of them as the target. Thus, the writer takes one of Translation II
students’ bureaus from year 2011, especially who take Translation II subject in A
class. From this group, the writer focuses on Indonesian-English translation
because the demand of this kind of translation is greater than the EnglishIndonesia translation. The amount of Indonesian-English translation product is six
products. The reason of why the writer to take this bureau is because the
communication between this group and writer is favorable, which mean it is easy
to meet with this group. And also, their translation product’s management is clear,
which cause the analysis is easier to conduct.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
Translation
Catford (in Hartono, 2003:11) argues that translation is replacement of
textual material in one language (source language) by equivalent textual
material in another language (target language).
Method
Macquarie dictionary (in Machali, 2009: 75) states that a method is a
way of doing something, especially in accordance with specific plan.
Error
Merriam Webster dictionary states that error is something that is not
correct; a wrong action or statement

ABSTRACT
This study was derived from a Translation II course program called
“Translation bureau job training.” In this program, the translation II students were
to make a group to run a bureau as a practical work in Translation II course. By
conducting this program, the students were expected to be able to apply their
knowledge that was achieved in Translation I course. The aims of this study are to
identify the most dominant translation method used by Translation II students in
running translation bureau job training; and to know the kinds of translation error
made by Translation II students in running translation bureau job training.
The writer applied qualitative descriptive research method. The data were
collected by using documents. The object of the study was six translation
products. The data was achieved through gathering translation product, deciding
source text and target text, and reading and understanding the text.
The finding indicated that translation products I,II, and VI used faithful
translation method, translation product III used semantic translation method, and
translation product IV and V used idiomatic translation method. And for tenses
error and meaning error, the finding showed that there were four errors in simple
present tense, two errors in simple past tense, and seven errors in contextual
meaning.
To sum up, the most dominant translation method is faithful translation
method. The number of translation errors was thirteen errors. By considering the
number of translation error, the writer advises that future translators should fully
understand the translation product and also increase their concentration in order to
avoid the same errors.

TRANSLATION METHOD USED BY TRANSLATION II STUDENTS IN
RUNNING TRANSLATION BUREAU JOB TRAINING
ABSTRACT
This study was derived from a Translation II course program called
“Translation bureau job training.” In this program, the translation II students were
to make a group to run a bureau as a practical work in Translation II course. By
conducting this program, the students were expected to be able to apply their
knowledge that was achieved in Translation I course. The aims of this study are to
identify the most dominant translation method used by Translation II students in
running translation bureau job training; and to know the kinds of translation error
made by Translation II students in running translation bureau job training.
The writer applied qualitative descriptive research method. The data were
collected by using documents. The object of the study was six translation
products. The data was achieved through gathering translation product, deciding
source text and target text, and reading and understanding the text.
The finding indicated that translation products I,II, and VI used faithful
translation method, translation product III used semantic translation method, and
translation product IV and V used idiomatic translation method. And for tenses
error and meaning error, the finding showed that there were four errors in simple
present tense, two errors in simple past tense, and seven errors in contextual
meaning.
To sum up, the most dominant translation method is faithful translation
method. The number of translation errors was thirteen errors. By considering the
number of translation error, the writer advises that future translators should fully
understand the translation product and also increase their concentration in order to
avoid the same errors.
