In learning a language, vocabulary is essential in conducting communication. Whenever we want to communicate with other people using a language, we should have mastered vocabulary related to the topic spoken.

2.2.2.1 Definition of Vocabulary

Vocabulary refers to all of words in the whole language or the words or phrases used in particular variety. Vocabulary is also one of the components of language which supports the speaker in communication. In other words, vocabulary plays a very important role in developing the four language skills listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As mentioned by Cameron 2001: 94, “a major resource for language teaching terms, the development of words, the meaning and the links between them will be covered under vocabulary”. As cited in www.nifl.govpartnershipforreadingglossaryglossary.html, vocabulary refers to the words a reader knows. Listening vocabulary refers to the words a person knows when hearing them in oral speech. Speaking vocabulary refers to the words we use when we speak. Reading vocabulary refers to the words a person knows when seeing them in print. Writing vocabulary refers to the words we use in writing. Frank 1972: 6 states that “vocabulary is the one of the English components, which has to be mastered and acquired by students in learning a new language”. It can be argued that vocabulary is a tool of communication which needs to be taught in context and the children should always be given plenty opportunities to use the language. Vocabulary itself consists of several parts of speech they are noun, verb, adjective, and adverb. From those kinds of vocabulary, the first that students need to know is noun. From the definition above, the writer can conclude that vocabulary is one of the language components that are used to communicate between someone to another. No language exists without vocabularies and words are signs or symbol for idea. Teaching and learning vocabulary related to words and their meanings. The more words learn, the more ideas we should have. It means that without vocabulary we will be unable to use the language communicatively.
