Teaching English for Young Learners is not easy. The teacher needs creative
and fun media to make the students easy and interested in learning English. There are
many kinds of media can be used to make English learning process become easy and

phenomena in this globalization era. Dealing with those phenomena, the writer wants
to know the kind of online learning used by High Flyers students of EF English First
Malang and their responses toward online learning they did.
The design used in this study was descriptive qualitative research design

because it was designed to obtain information concerning the current status of
phenomena and directed toward determining the nature of a situation as it exists at the
time of the study. Meanwhile, the instruments used were questionnaire, observation,
and document analyses to gather the data on subject’s opinion, beliefs, and feeling in
the situation.

students showed positive responses and 54 (23, 38%) students showed negative
responses. the students had fun and interest in playing the games in Practice and Play
until the last level. The students were also able to answer the questions delivered
online by playing the games easily. They were always interested in playing the games

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

This chapter consists of six parts; those are background of the study,
statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and
limitation, and the definition of the key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study
English is a universal language that is used by all people around the world.
These days, English becomes essential subject in schools. So, learning English is
undoubtedly important for individuals in this globalization era. Many people want to
learn English not for the sake of pleasure or prestige of knowing the language, but it
is because English is the key to get access to the scientific, technological, and
commercial world. It makes many parents realize that it is important to introduce
English to their children. Based on that fact, many parents bring their children into
English course or similar institution to get them familiar with English earlier.
In teaching children, a teacher needs creative and fun media to make them
easy and interested in learning English. Based on the National Education Standard of
RI, through the decree No.19/U/2005:
Learning process in education must be interactive, inspirative, fun,
challenging, motivating the learners to participate actively and also giving
space to them to show their creativity depend on interest and ability in their
physical and psychological development.

1

Many kinds of media can be used to make English learning process become
easy and interesting. The use of internet as teaching aid can be considered as a new
phenomenon in this globalization era.
The facility of internet application can support people to access everything for
military needs, academic needs, business, and education. It drives the changing of
inclination in education world from face to face education into online learning.
Online learning is something that can be created and accessed using either the internet
or an intranet (Alan, Jonathan & David: 2001). The higher technology in this time
makes easier to increase education quality. According to Purbo (in Bambang : 2008),
“among all of the facility in the internet, there are 5 applications that can be used for
learning needs. There are E-mail, Mailing List, News Group, File Transfer Protocol
(FTP), and World Wide Web (WWW)”. Most of this day’s learning programs are
delivered using the World Wide Web and Web Browser to access learning material.
Alan (2001: 4) says that the most often used in accessing learning material in online
learning is Web-Based Learning because it has a rich environment for building and
delivering online learning courseware.
The succeed of learning via online in English teaching learning process can be
shown by the responses of the students. Smart and Cappel (2006) have argued that, if
the responses show that the students enjoy, it means that the use online learning in
teaching learning process is suitable with students’ needs. It is successful when the
learners are able to answer the question. Smart and Cappel also have stated, “students
who are motivated to learn will choose tasks that enhance their learning, will work at
those tasks, and will persist in the face in difficulty in order to attain their goals.
2

However, the learners will not focus and will not get sufficient motivation or support
to study if the media is not suitable with the learners’ needs and characteristics,
unattractive and uninteresting. From the previous research conducted by Smart and
Cappel (2006), it was found that the students in elective course rated the online
learning units significantly higher in term of being “an effective way to learn” and
“fun” and they were significantly more in favor in using the online units again in the
course in the future.
Based on explanation, the writer was interested in analyzing the students
responses through online learning which is used by students in 1 st - 4th grade students
called High Flyers at EF English First Malang. The study is expected to enrich
knowledge of English teaching technique done by online learning. Besides, there are
no previous researchers who have conducted this research in English Department. So,
the result of this study can be used as a source of information for the next researcher
to continue or develop this research.
1.2

Statement of the Problems
Based on the background of study above, the writer formulated the problems

as follows:
1.2.1 What kind of online learning is used by High Flyers students at EF English First
Malang?
1.2.2 How are High Flyers students’ responses toward the use of online learning used
at EF English First Malang?

3

1.3 Purposes of the Study
The purposes of the study are stated below:
1.3.1 To know the online learning used by High Flyers students at EF English First
Malang.
1.3.2 To find the students’ responses toward the use of online learning used by High
Flyers students at EF English First Malang.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The result of this study is expected to be useful for English Department students
that knowing English teaching learning process by using online learning is important
to enrich their knowledge. It is also expected to be significantly useful for the further
researchers that the result of the study will give additional important information to
investigate other aspect of using online learning in teaching learning process.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
This study focused on the use of online learning used by students of EF
English First Malang as the scope. The limitation of this study is teaching media
using online learning used by High Flyers students (it is 1st – 4th grade students) of EF
English First Malang.
1.6

Definition of the Key Terms
There are some key terms that must be defined in order to avoid mistakes and

misunderstanding of the contents of the study, they are:
1. Media is a tool that can be manipulated, seen, listened, read, or spoken with
the instrument that is using well in teaching learning process and can
influence the affectivity of instructional program (Education Association). In
4

this research, the media used is online media for English teaching learning
processed (Hamzah: 2008)
2. Online learning can be defined as an instruction delivered electronically via
the internet, intranet, or multimedia platforms such as CD-ROM or DVD
(Hall: 2003).
3. High Flyers students is 1st – 4th grade students.
