TEOLOGI KRISTEN TENTANG KERJA ( VOCATION)
PADA MASA
PRA-REFORMASI DAN REFORMASI
Sukamto

Agustinus
dipengaruhi oleh Plato yang memberi penilaian "contemplative life"
(devita contemplativa) lebih tinggi dibandingkan “active life” (de vita
activa).

beberapa kata untuk menyebutnya work, job, employment,
working, occupation, vocation. Dari beberapa kata tersebut kata
vocation mempunyai arti yang menarik. Kata vocation yang dalam
bahasa Indonesia diterjemahkan pekerjaan berasal dari bahasa Latin
vocare jika diterjemahkan maknanya adalah memanggil. Artinya

apa yang dimaksud ideas adalah spiritual realities that exist in an
unseen world. (2) dunia materi yang merupakan source of all evil —of
pain, disappointment, imperfection, sorrow, and death.3Begitu juga

ungkapan Adriano Tilgher “work was a curse and nothing else.”6

In the course of church history the laity were usually seen as
Christians who are neither clergy nor monks and nuns. Such a
distinction can be helpful because each of these groups has a
differently oriented vocation within the life and mission of Christ's
company. For the clergy this is signified by a special ordination, for
members of religious orders by the monastic vows. This paper does not
deal with the function and status of set apart minister and religious
orders but with those who are usually only negatively referred to as
the non-clergy.9

buku De civitate dei pandangan dasarnya tentang dunia dipengaruhi
Manusia. Menurut Agustinus kehidupan dibagi dan dibedakan ke
dalam dua bagian (Two Lives) yaitu “active life” (de vita activa) dengan
"contemplative life" (devita contemplativa).10 Dalam The City of God
Book VIII, 4 dituliskan,

And, as as the study of wisdom consists in action and
contemplation, so that one part of it may be called active, and the
other contemplativethe active part having reference to the conduct
of life, that is, to the regulation of morals, and the contemplative part
to the investigation into the causes of nature and into pure truth ...11

The Church knows two lives divinely preached and commended
unto her: whereof the one is in faith, the other in ‘specie’; the one is in
the time of pilgrimage, the other in eternity of abiding; the one is in
labour, the other in rest; the one is on the way, the other in the [true]
country; the one is in the work of action, the other in the reward of
contemplation; the one turns away from evil and does good, the other

has no evil from which to turn away, and has great good to enjoy; the
one wars with the foe, the other reigns without a foe; the one is strong
in things adverse, the other has no sense of aught adverse; the one
bridles the lusts of the flesh, the other is given up to the joys of the
spirit; the one is anxious with the care of getting the victory, the other
in the peace of victory is without care; the one is helped in
temptations, the other, without any temptation, rejoices in its Helper
Himself; the one assists the needy, the other is where it finds none
needy; the one pardons the sins of others that its own sins may be
pardoned, the other suffers nothingthat it can pardon, nor does
anything that calls for pardon; the one is scourged with evil that it be
not lifted up with good things, the other through so great fullness of
grace is without any evil, so that without temptation of pride it cleaves
to the Supreme Good; the one discerns between good and evil, the
other sees things which are only good: therefore the one is good, but
still in miseries; the other is better and in beatitude (Tract. In Ioan.
Cxxiv. 5).12
Kemudian Agustinus dengan tidak ragu-ragu menarik kesimpulan
superioritas "contemplative life" (devita contemplativa) atas “active
life” (de vita activa) dengan berdasarkan penafsiran pada kisah Marta

dan Maria. Marta memilih bagian yang baik tetapi Maria memilih
yang lebih baik.

Martha chose a good part, but Mary the better. What Martha
chose passes away. She ministered to the hungry, the thirsty, the
homeless: but all these pass away, there will be when none will
hunger nor thirst. Therefore will her care be taken from her, ‘Mary

hath chosen the better part (meliorem), which shall not be taken away
from her’. She hath chosen to contemplate, to live by the Word (cbdx,
17).13

not refuse the discipline of this temporal life. However, he tended to
view this life as only a school for life eternal.”14 Demikian juga
denganGregorius Agung yang berpendapat sama dengan Agustinus
bahwa,

The contemplative life is greater in merit than the active, which
labours in the exercise of present work, whilst the other already tastes
with inward savour the rest that is to come. Although the active life is
good, the contemplative is better (Horn, in Ezech. i. iii. 9).15
Ciri dari kehidupan monastisisme adalah “implies a strong ethos of

withdrawal from society and culture, abandoning of the world, having

Dom Cuthbert Butler, Western Mysticism: The Teaching of Ss. Augustine, Gregory
and Bernard on Contemplation and contemplative Life, 160. Bandingkan juga dengan
pemahaman alegoris Agustinus atas kisah Lea dan Rahel: Two lives are held out to us
in the Body of Christ the one temporal, in which we labour; the other eternal, in
which we shall contemplate the delights of God. The names of Jacob's wives teach us
to understand this. For it is said that Lia is interpreted ‘labouring’, and Rachel ‘the
Beginning seen’, or ‘the Word by which is seen the Beginning’. Therefore the action of
human and mortal life, in which we live by faith, doing many laborious works, is Lia.
But the hope of the eternal contemplation of God, which has a sure and delightful
understanding of the truth, is Rachel (c. Faust, xxii. 52).

nothing to do with humanity.”16 Oleh karena itu teologi yang
pertengahan. Gagasan Thomas Aquinas tentang dunia juga dipengaruhi
oleh Agustinus yaitu membedakan dunia kehidupan “ active life” (de
vita activa) dengan "contemplative life" (devita contemplativa). Vita
Contemplativa orientasinya ke eternal sedangkan vita Activa perlu
untuk kehidupan sekarang.20 Bagi Thomas Aquinas, “... the life decoted

to inner stillness and spiritual knowledge, the vita contemplativa, is
the highest form of human activity.”21 Sama dengan Agustinus,
Thomas Aquinas meyakini bahwa contemplative life (devita

“The real “saint” is now the “secular saint” –not the one who
“Reformation returns the Christians into the world.”23

If you ask further, whether they count it also a good work when
they work at their trade, walk, stand, eat, drink, sleep, and do all kinds
of works for the nourishment of the body or for the common welfare,
and whether they believe that God takes pleasure in them because of
such works, you will find that they say, "No"; and they define good
works so narrowly that they are made to consist only of praying in
church, fasting, and almsgiving.Other works they consider to be in
vain, and think that God cares nothing for them. Sothrough their
damnable unbelief they curtail and lessen the service of God, Who is
servedby all things whatsoever that are done, spoken or thought in
faith.
So teaches Ecclesiastes ix: "Go thy way with joy, eat and drink,
and know that God accepteth thy works. Let thy garments be always
white; and let thy head lack no ointment. Live joyfully with the wife
whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity." “Let thy
garments be always white," that is, let all our works be good, whatever

they may be, without any distinction. And they are white when I am
certain and believe that they please God. Then shall the head of my
soul never lack the ointment of a joyful conscience.24
Hal yang sama dia tulis dalam An Open to the Christian Nobility,
dia menyatakan bahwa all Christians are truly of the Spiritual estate.
Adapun bunyi lengkapnya sebagai berikut:

It is pure invention that pope, bishops, priests and monks are to
be called the " spiritual estate"; princes, lords, arti- sans, and farmers
the " temporal estate. " That is a fine bit of lying and hypocrisy. Yet no
one should be frightened by it ; and for this reason - viz., that all
Christians are truly of the "spiritual estate," and there is among them
no difference at all but that of office, as Paul says in I Cor. XII, We are
all one body, yet every member has its own work, whereby it serves
every other, all because we have one baptism, one Gospel, one faith,
and are all alike Christians ; for baptism, Gospel and faith alone make
us "spiritual" and a Christian people.25
Orang-orang Abad Pertengahan dianggap oleh Luther telah
menyempitkan pemahaman pekerjaan yang baik (good works) yaitu
keyakinan mereka atas Allah, meskipun mereka melakukan doa, puasa,
penebusan dosa, tetapi kalau tidak bersatu dengan Allah (he who is not
at one with God) semuanya sia-sia.

So a Christian who lives in this confidence toward God, a knows
all things, can do all things, undertakes all things that are to be done,
and does everything cheerfully and freely; not that he may gather
many merits and good works, but because it is a pleasure for him to
please God thereby, and he serves God purely for nothing, content

that his service pleases God. On the other hand, he who is not at one
with God, or doubts, hunts and worries in what way he may do
enough and with many works move God. He runs to St. James of
Compostella, to Rome, to Jerusalem, hither and yon, prays St. Bridget's
prayer and the rest, fasts on this day and on that, makes confession
here, and makes confession there, questions this man and that, and yet
finds no peace. He does all this with great effort, despair and disrelish
of heart, so that the Scriptures rightly call such works in Hebrew
Avenama, that is, labor and travail. And even then they are not good
works, and are all lost.26
Konsep Luther tentang kerja dipengaruhi oleh penafsiran atas 1
Korintus 7:2027 “Baiklah tiap-tiap orang tinggal dalam keadaan, seperti
waktu ia dipanggil (klhsei) Allah.”
Bagi Luther “A Christian is a

perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly
dutiful servant of all, subject to all.”29 Bahkan dengan tegas ia
menuliskan bahwa:

A man does not live for himself alone in this mortal body to work
for italone, but he lives also for all men on earth; rather, he lives only

forothers and not for himself. To this end he brings his body into
subjectionthat he may the more sincerely and freely serve others ...30

Here Moses adds that the earth was leased to man, on this
condition, thathe busies himself cultivating it. It follows from this that
men were madeto employ themselves doing something and not to be
lazy and idle.32
Kerja menjadi sebuah beban.

perkembangannya maknanya mengalami distorsi.
“active life” (de vita activa) dengan "contemplative life" (devita
contemplativa). Active life yaitu kerja dalam kehidupan sehari-hari
dinilai lebih rendah jika dibandingkan dengan area contemplative life
(kerja dalam monasteri, gereja). Pandangan ini kemudian sangat
mempengaruhi corak pikir Abad Pertengahan termasuk pemikiran
membedakan bukan tempatnya tetapi tujuannya.
