  ABSTRACT

This thesis discusses about a character in the novel and her behavior. It would be compared to the prostitution in Victorian era. The character is Rose Stanley, who lived in Edinburgh, in the Victorian era. Rose Stanley was a student in Marcia Blaine School, a school for girls. Rose Stanley did not come from the rich family, so she needed money to fulfill her wishes. She could get money from her job as a nude model. She became the member of Brodie set. Brodie set was a group that was formed by the teacher in Marcia Blaine School, named Jean Brodie. The set consisted of five girls whom studied there. They had different unique characteristics. The thesis would analyze further about Rose Stanley’s characteristics in the novel and her sex behavior as the reflection of the prostitution in the Victorian era. Young girls and women were forced into the business as a way to earn money or keep themselves off the streets in Victorian era. These women were looked down by society as contributing to moral decline and often times referred to as Magdalene’s or whore. Although prostitution is thought of as a moral dilemma, it is also viewed as a necessary evil, because it is considered less harmful for a man to engage in sex without love. Rose Stanley is like a prostitute as she sells her body to get money, she uses the money to fulfill her needs because she comes from the middle class, she begins her career when she is a child as many prostitute in Victorian era do. The writer uses Sociological approach in analyzing the problem because the society and environments at that time influenced the author in creating the characters in the novel. The writer also intends to see the reflection of social condition in Victorian era in the novel through the character of Rose Stanley.
