IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN-8

PALANGKA RAYA

ABSTRACT

  The study was aimed at measuring the effect of using Picture Series in writing narrative text on the students’ ability at the eighth grade of SMPN-8 Palangka Raya. The type of the study was Quasi-Experimental, especially non-randomized control group, pre-test and post-test; the design of the study was quantitative approach to find out the problem of the study. The problem of the study was’’ Is there any significant difference between students’ ability using series picture and without series picture in writing narrative text at the eight grade of SMPN-8 Palangka Raya?’’

  There were two classes becoming sample of the study, they were class VIII4 as the experimental group and VIII5 as the control group, and the total number was 69 students. The writer gave a pre- test to gain the first students’ writing score. After gaining the pre-test score, the writer gave treatment by series picture to the experimental group, while gave the lesson as usual to the control group. After that, the writer gave post-test to the both experimental and control group to gain the students’ final score. To examine the hypothesis, the writer used t-test formula. In addition, the writer used SPSS 17.0 program to compare the data.

  The result of t test using manual calculation showed that the calculated value (t observed ) was greater than t table at 5% and 1% significance level or 2.000< 4.510 > 2.660. The result of t- test using SPSS 17.0 calculation indicated that the calculated value (t ) was also greater

  than t table at 5% and 1% significance level or 2.000 < 4.499 > 2.660. This indicated that the alternative hypothesis stating there is significant difference between students’ ability using series picture and without series picture in writing narrative text at eight grade of SMPN-8 Palangka

  Raya was accepted and Ho stating that there is no significant difference between students’ ability using series picture and without series picture in writing narrative text at eight grade of SMPN-8 Palangka Raya was rejected. Therefore, teaching writing narrative text using series picture at the eighth grade of SMPN-8 Palangka Raya was effective at 5% and 1% significance level.

MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN BAHASA INGGGRIS SISWA DALAM

PENULISAN TEKS NARRATIVE PADA SISWA KELAS DELAPAN

DI SMPN-8 PALANGKA RAYA

ABSTRAK

  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur keefektifan penggunaan gambar berseri untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa dalam penulisan teks narrative pada siswa kelas delapan di SMPN-8 Palangka Raya. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan kuasi- eksperimen desain, khususnyadesain tanpa pengacakan,kelompok kontrol, pra-uji, pasca uji dan penulis menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif untuk menemukan jawaban dari penelitian. Masalah penelitian adalah’’ apakah ada perbedaan signifikan anatara kemampuan siswa menggunakan gambar berseri dan tanpa menggunakan gambar berseri dalam menulis text narrative pada kelas delapan di SMPN-

8 Palangka Raya?’’

  Terdapat dua kelas yang menjadi sampel penelitian, yaitu kelas VIII4 sebagai group experiment dan VIII5 sebagai group kontrol. Dan jumlah keseluruhan adalah 69 siswa. Kedua kelompok diberikan pra-uji untuk memperoleh nilai pertama siswa. Setelah mendapatkan nilai pra uji, siswa di kelompok eksperimen diajarkan dengan media gambar berseri sementara memberikan pelajaran seperti biasa tanpa media kepada kelompok kontrol. Kemudian, penulis memberikan pasca uji kepada kedua kelompok experimen dan kontrol untuk memperoleh nilai akhir siswa. Untuk menguji hipotesis, penulis menggunakan rumus t-test.

  Selain itu, penulis juga menggunakan SPSS 17,0 program untuk membandingkan data. Hasil t-test menggunakan perhitungan manual menunjukkan bahwa nilai yang dihitung (t- test) lebih besar dari t-tabel sebesar pada tingkat signifikansi 5% dan 1% atau 2,000 <4.510>

Hasil t-test menggunakan SPSS 17,0 perhitungan mengindikasikan bahwa nilai yang dihitung (t-hitung) juga lebih besar dari t-tabel pada 5% dan 1% atau tingkat signifikansi 2,000 <4.499> 2.660. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa hipotesis alternatif menyatakan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan siswa menggunakan gambar berseri dan tanpa gambar berseri dalam menulis teks narrative kelas delapan di SMPN-8 Palangka Raya diterima dan hipotesis nol yang menyatakan tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan siswa menggunakan gambar berseri dan tanpa gambar besri dalam menulis narrative teks keas delapan di SMPN-8 Palangka Ray ditolak.

  Oleh karena itu, mengajarkan penulisan teks narrative menggunakan media gambar berseri pada siswa kelas delapan di SMPN-8 Palangka Raya adalah effektif pada tingkat signifikansi 5% dan 1%. Kata Kunci : Gambar Berseri, Kemampuan Menulis, Teks Narrative
