MATERIALS DESIGN IN ELT:
Principles and Model

Principles of Materials in ELT
• Materials provide stimulus to learning.
– Good materials do not teach but encourage the learners to
learn)
– They should contain:
•
•
•
•
Interesting texts
Enjoyable activities
Opportunities to use the language
Visible content
• Materials help to organize the teaching and learning
process (Structure should be coherence and clear)
Principles of … (cont)
• Materials embody a view of the nature of
language and learning (relationship of language
and learning)
• Materials reflect nature of learning tasks (reflect
complexity of tasks but appear manageable)
• Materials provide models of correct and
appropriate language use.
A Materials Design Model
INPUT
CONTENT
LANGUAGE
TASK
• The primary focus of the unit is the TASK.
• The language and content are drawn from
INPUT and selected according to what the
learners will need in order to do the task
• An important feature of the model is to create
coherence in terms of both language and
content throughout the unit
INPUT
• This may be a text, dialogue, video recording, diagram
or any piece of communication data
• The input consists of:
–
–
–
–
Stimulus materials for activities
New language items
Correct models pf language use
A topic of communication
CONTENT FOCUS
• Language is not an end in itself, but a means of
conveying information and feeling
• The content should be exploited to generate
meaningful communication in the classroom
LANGUAGE FOCUS
• Learning objective is to enable learners to use
language
• However, they also need to be provided with
language knowledge
• Language focus provide chance to take the
language to pieces, study how it works, and
practice putting it back together again
TASKS
• Since the purpose of learning language is to use
the language, the materials should be designed to
lead towards a communicative task (the learners
use content and language knowledge they have
built up through the unit
