ABSTRACT

A Study on Vocabulary Learning Strategies in English Department

(A Descriptive Study on the Fourth Semester Students of Muhammadiyah University of

Purwokerto in Academic Year 2013/2014)

  The aims of this research were: (1) to know the kinds of students’ strategies in learning vocabulary, (2) to know the most dominant strategy used by the students in learning vocabulary.The data was taken on July 2014 at English Education Department. The researcher applied descriptive method in this research to the fourth semester of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokertoin academic year 2013/2014. Random sampling was used to get the sample which consisted of 41 students from five classes. In collecting the data the researcher used questionnaire which consisted of 25 items. The researcher analyzed the data by using percentage to determine the strategies in learning vocabulary most frequently used by the students. The results were: each student employed all of vocabulary learning strategies. There were 20 students who used determination strategy and the percentage which was reached 70.24%, 8 students used metacognitive strategy and the percentage which was reached 61.46%. On the other hand, memory strategy was used by 6 students and the percentage which was reached 61.37%. Cognitive strategy was used by 4 students and the percentage which was reached 57.37%, and social strategy used by 3 students and the percentage which was reached 55.22%. So, the dominant strategy used by the students was determination strategy.
