ABSTRACT

Ririn Herlina. S891402045. 2017. A Study on Grammatical Errors in Translating Indonesian

Text into English (A Qualitative Study at the English Department of Teacher Training and

Education Faculty, IKIP PGRI Madiun in the Academic Year of 2015/ 2016) . Thesis. English

Education Department. Graduate School. Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta. First Advisor: Dr. Abdul Asib, M.Pd.; Second Advisor: Dr. Ngadiso, M.Pd.

The objectives of the research are: (1) to investigate the grammatical errors committed by students in translating Indonesian into English, (2) to investigate the sources of the errors made by the students in translating Indonesian into English, and (3) to describe the strategies or techniques used by students in their translation.

The method that is used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The study was conducted in October 2015 at IKIP PGRI Madiun. The population is the works of 7A students in English education department of IKIP PGRI Madiun. 7A consists of 37 students. The researcher takes their translation texts as the population. By using purposive sampling technique, the researcher takes sample as the representation of information. There are 10 translation texts that are analyzed. The instruments to collect the data are in the form of document analysis, observation, interview, and questionnaire. In this study, the researcher used triangulation to check the validity of the data.

The result of the study shows that (1) the total number of grammatical error is 353 errors; (2) in interlingual error, 19 errors are transfer of structure, 23 errors are overextension of analogy and 99 errors are interlingual error. While, in intralingual error, 9 errors are overgeneralization error, 135 errors are ignorance of rule restriction, 32 errors are incomplete application of rule, and 36 errors are false concept hypothesized; (3) from 353 errors, 64 or 18.13% were using Calque, 66 or 18.69% were using linguistic amplification, 172 or 48.72% were using linguistic compression, 51 or 14.44% were using literal translation.

Therefore, the result of errors in this study can be used to know the students’ capability in grammatical aspect. It can also be used to know the sources of errors and the techniques that are commonly used by students.
