Matthew 21: 21

Jesus answered and said unto them,

Verily I say unto you,

If ye have faith, and doubt not,

ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree,

but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou

removed,

and be thou cast into the sea;

it shall be done.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

What I believe is, when Jesus started something, no matter what He would finish it in His way. I had experienced many things that made me disappointed and wanted to stop doing all efforts in my life. However, Jesus taught me about patience, and He lifted me up when I fell down. Therefore, first of all, I would like to say thank to my God, my Father, Jesus Christ for His love and righteousness. With His guidance I could finish this thesis.

Secondly, I would like to thank my father, Abidin Sihombing, as the most inspiring figure in my life who taught me to be brave, not to run from every single problem in this world, but solve it in order to be a responsible man. Thank to my mother, Mutiara Sianturi who has been taking care of me since I was born until now, she never forgets to remind my needs, teaches me to be more patient and conscientious, and tells me about the real love. Thank to my first sister, Merry Sihombing for always motivating, supporting me in terms of psychology, teaching me how to control an impulsive emotion well, and suggesting me to continue my study in Faculty of Language and Arts, Soegijapranata Catholic University. Thank to my second sister, Wenny Sihombing who kept preparing my future plans based on Jesus‟s way, and helping me in some financial supports. I will always try my best to make you happy, nothing is bigger than saying I love you so much to you my family.

Next, I would like to give my biggest gratitude to Mr. Anton as my major and Mrs. Ninik as my ma‟am and co-major in this thesis. Thank you for guiding me to write a proper thesis even I knew that you were busy to teach classes and guide other students to write their thesis.

ABSTRACT

English debate is one of the most prestigious English competitions in Indonesia. Winning an English debate competition is not easy. The debaters should be able to provide strong arguments and convince the judges by fluently delivering the speech as a good manner. The purposes of this study are to find out the performance features used on the final round debate of NUDC Regional Java 2016, to investigate how often performance features occurred, and to discover the significance of performance features on the debate. The data were taken by recording a final debate round which was split into 8 videos, 7.20 seconds for each video. The number of participants was 8 debaters from different universities.

To collect the data, the researcher transcribed all videos and analyzed the performance features (Filled Pauses, Repetitions, False Starts and Backtrackings, and Incomplete Utterances). The researcher used qualitative method and quantified the qualitative data to obtain the findings. As the results, the researcher found that Filled pauses are the most frequently used among the other features which occur 240 times or 49.3% and performance features do not contribute towards a better quality of the debate and improve debater

‟s proficiency and fluency because the winner in the debate competition is the one who is fluent, able to convince the judges, and their viewpoints too.

Backtrackings, and Incomplete Utterances ).
