Reported Speech is one of English structure lesson in SMA, MA and
SMK. It is taught in the eleventh grade students of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus.
Most of them are still difficult to understand it. Therefore, the teacher must choose
a right teaching method. The teacher should use an appropriate method to teach

reported speech. The teacher can use index card match to help the student mastery
it easily.
The objectives of this research is to find out whether there is significant
difference between the mastery of reported speech of the eleventh grade students
of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus before and after being taught by using index card
match in academic year 2011/2012.
The research is done at the eleventh grade students of SMK PGRI 1
Mejobo Kudus. The design of this research is Quasi-experimental research by
using test instrument. The research subject is the whole students, consist of 38
students. The instrument used to collect the data is written test that contents 40
multiple choice test. All of students are given pre-test, the test which is given
before using index card match, and after they get the treatment, the research
continuous giving post-test.
The result of this research indicates that using index card match can lead
the students to create an active learning environment in mastering reported speech
material. It can be seen from the pre-test and post-test result. The result of pre-test
is low (mean=65.32, median=63.94, mode=62, and standard deviation=14.48).
And the result of post-test is sufficient (mean=76.39, median=82.5, modus=80.37,
and standard deviation=8.65). It shows that there is a significant difference
between the mastery of reported speech of the eleventh grade students of SMK
PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus before and after being taught by using index card match in
academic year 2011/2012. The result of t-observation is higher than t-table (to =
8.48 ˃ tt = 2.03).
Based on the result of the research above, the writer suggests that the
teacher can use index card match as the one of alternative method to teach
reported speech material because it is proved that it works well in increasing
students’ reported speech mastery.

Reported speeh adalah salah satu pelajaran struktur bahasa inggris di
SMA, MA, dan SMK. Materi tersebut diajarkan kepada siswa kelas sebelas SMK
PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus. Kebanyakan dari mereka masih kesulitan terhadap materi
tersebut. Oleh karena itu guru harus memilih salah satu metode pengajaran yang
benar. Guru saharusnya menggunakan metode yang sesuai untuk mengajar
reported speech. Guru dapat menggunakan metode index card match untuk
membantu siswa dalam menguasai reported speech dengan mudah.
Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui adakah perbedaan yang
signifikan penguasaan kalimat tidak langsung siswa kelas sebelas di SMK PGRI 1
Mejobo Kudus antara sebelum dan sesudah diajarkan menggunakan index card
match tahun ajaran 2011/2012.
Penelitian ini dilakukan di kelas sebelas di SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus.
Rancangan penelitian ini adalah kwasi-experimental research (experiment semu)
dengan menggunakan instrument tes. Subyek penelitian ini adalah semua siswa
kelas sebelas, yang terdiri dari 38 siswa. Instrument yang digunakan untuk
mengumpulkan data adalah tes tertulis yang terdiri dari 40 soal pilihan ganda.
Semua siswa diberi pre-tes yaitu tes yang diberikan sebelum menggunakan index
card match , dan pos-tes yang diberikan sesudah menggunakan index card match.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa menggunakan index card match
dapat meningkatkan kreatifitas belajar aktif siswa dalam penguasaan materi
reported speech. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil pre-tes dan pos-tes. Hasil dari pretes rendah (mean=65.32, median=63.94, modus=62, dan deviasi standar=14.48)
dan hasil dari pos-tes cukup (mean=76.39, median=82.5, modus=80.37, dan
deviasi standar=8.65). Hal ini menunjukkan ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada
tingkat kemampuan reported speech siswa kelas sebelas di SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo
Kudus antara sebelum dan sesudah diajar menggunakan index card match tahun
ajaran 2011/2012. Hasil t-observation lebih tinggi dari pada t-tabel (to = 8.48 ˃ tt =
2.03).
Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diatas, penulis menyarankan bahwa guru
dapat menggunakan index card match sebagai salah satu metode alternatif untuk
mengajar materi reorted speech, karena telah terbukti bahwa index card match
berperan baik pada peningkatan penguasaan reported speech siswa.
