Synopsis of A Thousand Splendid Suns

Mariam was five years old the first time she heard the word harami because she was
illegitimate daughter of Jalil Khan who was a rich and powerful man with three
wives and nine children. She loved Thursday when her father came to visit her.
Mariam's mother, Nana, had an entirely different perspective of Jalil. For every
wonderful story he told Mariam, Nana told her an entirely opposite one about his
neglect. For her 15th birthday, Mariam asked Jalil to bring her to a movie at his
theater with all her siblings. He reluctantly agreed to meet her the following day and
bring her there. But when he didn't arrive at the arranged spot, Mariam decided to
walk to Herat for the first time in her life. She asked around town to learn where he
lived, then went to his house. She was barred from entering, so she spent the night
waiting on the porch to see her father. She was angry and ashamed of him. When she
got home, she discovered that Nana had hung herself from a tree. After the funeral,

Mariam was brought to live with her father in Herat.

After she had been there for a week. They informed her that she had been
betrothed to a man named Rasheed, from Kabul. He was at least thirty years her
senior. The wedding would be held the next day then she would leave immediately
for Kabul on the bus with her new husband. She pleaded for them not to do this to
her but the women had made up their minds. Although ashamed, Jalil could do
nothing to hinder their wishes. The next day she was married in a rushed ceremony
and started her journey to Kabul. She vowed to Jalil that she would never see him
again. Finally, Mariam was pregnant. The only neighbor lady who was friendly
toward her was Fariba, who was pregnant as well. However, Mariam eventually
learned that Fariba's baby had been born. Fariba named her Laila. Mariam's only

concern about her own pregnancy was that Rasheed seemed to put too much hope in
the child being a boy. She was devastated when she had a miscarriage and lost her
baby. April 1978 Six miscarriages and four years later, Rasheed's disdain for her had
turned to violence and Mariam lived in hear of him. At the same time, the president
of Afghanistan had been overthrown by a military coup and a democratic

government had been established.

Laila grew as a beautiful girl and the best student in her class. She has a
bestfriend, Tariq. Tariq didn't tell Laila that his family was moving to Pakistan to flee
the war until the day before they left. Babi finally convinced Fariba to flee to
Pakistan. What had really convinced her was that Laila had been nearly struck by an
errant bullet in their yard. They decided to take only what they needed and sell the
rest to a pawn shop. Laila and Babi spent a couple of days packing everything up but
when Laila had finally started to a haul everything outside to wait for a taxi, their
house was struck by a missile. Rasheed found Laila under the rubble of what had
been her house. Her mother and father were dead. He brought the girl back to their
house to recover. Mariam noticed Rasheed acting overtly hospitable and kind toward
Laila. In the end, fifteen year old Laila agreed to marry the over sixty year old
Rasheed. Finally, Laila got two children, Aziza and Zalmai. Mariam and Laila
became a friend like mother and daughter. They joined to oppose Rasheed. He
begged her to run away with her and Aziza the next spring. But they failed and the
police returned them both home.

One day on their return from the orphanage Laila and Mariam were shocked
to see Tariq standing at the door. Unfortunately, that night Zalmai told Rasheed

about Tariq’s visit. Rasheed brought Zalmai upstairs, locked him in his room, and

then came back down with his belt. He began beating Laila, and Mariam couldn't
help but try to stop him. The violence quickly escalated and Mariam could tell that
Rasheed intended to kill Laila. While they were down on the ground with Rasheed
choking Laila to death, Mariam rushed out to the shed and brought back a shovel.
She struck him, intending to finish it. She knew that it was only a matter of time
before Rasheed brought out his gun in order to finish it himself. Mariam was
sentenced to death after a cursory adjudication in which she did not deny what she
had done. Mariam became an instant hero at the women's prison. Most of the other
women were there for trying to run away and only Mariam had taken action against
her husband and abuser. Before her sentence was carried out, she spent ten days in
prison. She was brought to Ghazi Stadium and executed in front of a crowd of
thousands. Finally, Laila married Tariq the day they arrived in Murree, Pakistan.
April 2003 when they got back to Kabul, Laila used the money to help rebuild the
orphanage, where she started working. Tariq found a job at an NGO that helped
landmine victims, and they started a happier life together.
