CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
As international language, English has been taught to learners in
most countries in the world. As the foreign language, English is also
taught in Indonesia in elementary school until university level. Since
1960s, English has become the formal medium of instruction in higher
education for
many centuries and it is increasingly used in several
countries where the language has no official status (Cristal, 2003: 112).
English can be learned in the form of the written and oral. Doing a
communication in written and oral form is hard to do when the speaker
and listener do not have a knowledge and ability in using the language.
In teaching learning process, the teacher needs media to transfer the
knowledge to the students. Media are used to support the lesson in order
the students are easy to get the essential of the lesson. The media can be
handbook, cassette, CDs. Richard (1995: 255) states that textbooks,
taskbooks are often accompanied by workbook, CDs, and comprehensive
teaching guides, providing a rich and varied resource for the teachers and
learners.
In arranging the textbook, the writer’s textbook should be suitable
with the newest curriculum. According to Nunan (1998: 14), curriculum is
usually used to refer a particular program of the study. It refers to all

aspects of planning and managing educational program. The newest
curriculum in Indonesia is School Based Curriculum. Based on Mulyasa,
(2002: 12). School Based Curriculum is operational curriculum arranged,
improved and done by each school which is ready and be able to develop
this curriculum which refers to regulation number 201 in 2003 about
National Education System. School has the self – authority to improve
themselves. The objectives are appropriate with situation, condition and
school’s need for their students.
The Bridge English Competence for Junior High School Grade Nine
is arranged and developed by the writers in order the students can reach
their purpose; it is to master the basic competence in English. The
exercises developed in The Bridge English Competence for Junior High
School Grade Nine are designed by the writers in order to attract and
reflect the use of English as a communication tool in the real life. The
Bridge English Competence for Junior High School Grade Nine was first
printed in 2007, arranged by Kistono, Ismukoco, Esti Tri Andayani, and
albert Topan. This book was published by Yudhistira Publisher.
There are many researches that analyzed the compatibility of English
textbook, but the writer is interested in analyzing the compatibility of The
Bridge English Competence for Junior High School Grade Nine with
School Based curriculum.

B. Problem of the study
The problem, which the writer is going to investigate, is “ are the
materials of English textbook entitled “The Bridge English Competence
for Junior High School Grade Nine” compatible with the guidelines of
School Based Curriculum?” The writer raises several subsidiary research
questions as follows;
1. Are the listening materials of English textbook entitled “The Bridge
English Competence for Junior High School Grade Nine” compatible
with the guidelines of School Based Curriculum?
2.
Are the speaking materials of English textbook entitled “The Bridge
English Competence for Junior High School Grade Nine” compatible
with the guidelines of School Based Curriculum?
3. Are the reading materials of English textbook entitled “The Bridge
English Competence for Junior High School Grade Nine” compatible
with the guidelines of School Based Curriculum?
4. Are the writing materials of English textbook entitled “The Bridge
English Competence for Junior High School Grade Nine” compatible
with the guidelines of School Based Curriculum?
C. Objective of the study
Based on the research problem, the objectives of the research are;

1. Investigating whether or not the listening material in “The Bridge
English Competence” textbook is compatible with indicators in
listening skill of School Based Curriculum.
2. Investigating whether or not the listening material in “The Bridge
English Competence” textbook is compatible with indicators in
speaking skill of School Based Curriculum.
3. Investigating whether or not the listening material in “The Bridge
English Competence” textbook is compatible with indicators in
reading skill of School Based Curriculum.
4. Investigating whether or not the listening material in “The Bridge
English Competence” textbook is compatible with indicators in writing
skill of School Based Curriculum.
D. Benefit of the Study
This study is expected to have two kinds of benefit.
1. Theoretical benefits
a. The writer hopes the result of this research can give input to
improve the textbook so that the next English textbook can be
designed better.
b. The result of the study can be used as the reference for those who
want to evaluate the other textbooks.

2. Practical benefits
a. The writer hopes that the teachers will know the appropriate
textbook that can be used to support teaching – reading process,
and also the teachers know how to evaluate a textbook.
b. The teachers know how far the textbook follows the curriculum
demand.
E. Limitation of the Study
The writer focuses her research only on the content of English
textbook entitled “The Bridge English Competence for Junior High School
Grade Nine” based on School Based Curriculum. This book is used in
SLTPN 1 Karanganyar, Ngawi, East Java.
F. Research Paper Organization
Research paper organization is given in order to that the readers
could easily understand the content of the research paper.
The organization of his research paper is arranged as follows:
Chapter I is introduction. This chapter concern with the background
of the study, problem statement, objective of the study, benefit of the
study, limitation of the study and research paper organization
Chapter II is review of related literature. This chapter consist of
previous study, English textbook ( notion of textbook, function of
textbook), the English textbook entitled “The Bridge English Competence

for Junior High School Grade Nine”, textbook analysis (Cunningsworth’s
evaluation, School Based Curriculum (rationale, standard of
material
competence, standard of English competency for Junior High School and
Syllabus)).
Chapter III is research method. It consists of type of research, object
of research, data and data sources, technique of collecting data and
technique for analyzing the data.
Chapter IV is research finding and discussion. It consists of material
of listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill, and writing skill found in
the content of “The Bridge English Competence for Junior High School
Grade Nine” textbook, analysis and compatibility of skill indicators and
discussion.
Chapter V is conclusion and suggestion based on the discussion of
the research findings.
