ABSTRACT
One kind of novels that is interesting to analyze and will be discussed in
this research paper is The Family from One End Street written by Eve Garnett.
The Family from One End street is a story of a big and poor family. Mrs. Ruggles,
the main character in this novel was a washerwoman and her husband is a
dustman. Mrs. Ruggles has to struggle for her family survival because there are
seven children which each children has different attitude and different problems.
So, in this novel there are a lot of conflicts faced by Mrs Ruggles, a main
character in the novel. There are some theories that help the writer in finding the
theme through external conflicts. The theories are : theory of conflict, theory of
theme, and theory of how to analyzed the theme through conflict.
The first discussion is about the external conflicts of Mrs. Ruggles. She
faced conflicts with others characters such as her husband, Mr. Ruggles and her
children, Lily Rose and Kate also with her friend, Mrs. Smith. the external
conflicts of Mrs. Ruggles became the clues for finding the theme. The second
discussion is about the theme that is analyzed through Mrs. Ruggles external
conflicts. The theme of The Family from One End Street is a superior and
dominant working mother has power to take control of her family and her relation
in society.

Salah satu novel yang menarik untuk dianalisis dan yang akan di bahas
dalam makalah ini adalahThe Family from One End Street yang ditulis oleh Eve
Garnett. The Family from One End Street adalah sebuah novel yang menceritakan
tentang sebuah keluarga besar dan miskin. Mrs. Ruggles adalah karakter utama
dalam novel ini yang bekerja sebagai tukang cuci dan suaminya adalah seorang
tukang sampah. Mrs. Ruggles harus berjuang untuk kelangsungan keluarga
mereka dikarenakan keluarga itu mempunyai tujuh orang anak yang masingmasing mempunyai sikap dan masalah yang berdeda-beda. Jadi, di dalam novel
ini banyak sekali conflict yang dihadapi Mrs.Ruggles sebagai karekter utama. Ada
beberapa teori yang membantu penulis dalam menemukan tema melalui konflik.
Teori-teorinya antara lain : teori konflik, teori tema dan teori menganalisa tema
melalui konflik.
Diskusi yang pertama adalah tentang konflik external yang dialami Mrs.
Ruggles. Mrs. Ruggles menghadapi konflik dengan karakter lain di dalam cerita,
seperti dengan suaminya, Mr. Ruggles dengan anak-anaknya, Lily Rose dan Kate,
juga dengan temannya, Mrs. Smith. Konflik external Mrs. Ruggles kemudian
menjadi clue untuk menemukan tema. Diskusi yang kedua adalah tentang tema
yang di analisis melalui konflik external Mrs. Ruggles. Tema dari novel The
Family from One End Street adalah seorang ibu yang super dan dominan dalam
peerjaan mempunyai kekuasaan untuk mengatur sebuah keluarga dan relasinya di
dalam masyarakat.

ABSTRACT
