2. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF FACEBOOK What is Facebook ?

Facebook is a social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook Inc. In other words, Facebook is a social networking website where users can join the community such as a city, work place, school, and region to connect and interact with others. College students also can add heir friends, send messages, and update personal profile for others to see on their Facebook. Then developed a network for top-level schools and some large companies.

Anonymous (2009) since 11 September 2006, people with any email address to register on Facebook. Users can choose to join one or more networks are available, such as by high school, work place, or geographical area. Facebook encountered problems in recent years in countries such as the blocking of Syria, Iran and some work in order workers are not abusing its time too pen up. And concerns about allegations that Zuckerberg stealing source code from his friends to make up.

Facebook was found by Mark Zuckerberg with his roommates and fellow Harvard University student, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. It was first launched in February 4, 2004 at the Facebook.com. Mark Zuckerberg created Facemash, the predecessor to Facebook, on October 28, 2003 when he was at Harvard as a sophomore. According to The Harvard Crimson, the site is similar to Hot or Not, and using "photo obtained from a Facebook online in nine dormitories, put the two photos side by side at a time and asking users to choose which are the most sexy".

(18)

Mark Zuckerberg helped create Facebook in his dorm room at Harvard. To accomplish this, Zuckerberg hacked into the Harvard computer network and copy protected images private dormitory ID. Harvard at that time did not have a "face book" (directory containing photos and basic information) students. Facemash attract 450 visitors and 22,000 photo views in the first four hours on the air.

This site was quickly forwarded to several campus group list server, but turned off a few days later by the Harvard administration. Zuckerberg was charged by penetrating campus security, violating copyrights, and violating individual privacy, and threatened issued. However, the charges were dropped. Zuckerberg expanded on this initial project that semester by creating a social study tools for exams art history final, by uploading 500 paintings Augusta to its website, with one image per page along with a comment box. He opened the site to classmates, and they began to share notes.

The website’s name stems from the name of books given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better. The website currently has more than 400 million active users worldwide. Since it began to take place of friendster.com, the number of facebook users in Indonesia has showed a tremendous increase from 831,000 people in December 2008 to 22,378,640 in April 2010, making it the third largest country on facebook after the United States and the United Kingdom.

(19)

Nowadays, everyone have account on facebook. Especially for college student. Facebook not allows anyone who claims to be at least 13 years old worldwide to become registered user of the website, eventhough proof is not required.

Eventhough, according to Consumer Reports’s survey in May 2011, there are 7,5 million children under the age of 13 years old, and another 5 million under 10 years, thus violating the site’s terms of service. In addition, it must be admitted, Facebook is currently the most effective media to promote everything. There are over 500 million users world wide.

Data last Check Facebook per October 12, 2010, there mention of 27, 953, 340 Facebook users in Indonesia with a little more male users than female users. All the time, Facebook added a feature to its website. On 6 September 2006, launched the News Feed was placed in each of the main pages and notifies the user profile information such as change, subsequent events, and user friend's birthday.

This allows spammers and other users to manipulate these features by creating a false event or birthday lies to draw attention to the profile or the campaign. Initially, the News Feed for dissatisfaction among Facebook users; some of whom complained that too cluttered and full of unnecessary information, while other users consider it easy for users to track a person's activities, such as : relationship status changes, events, and conversations with other users.

In response, Zuckerberg sends his apology for the failure of this site to include features that can set their own privacy. Since then, users began to get

(20)

control over the types of information that can be automatically distributed to friends. Now the user is able to prevent a group of friends see updates on her activities such as change the profile, wall posts, and newly added friends.

In February 23, 2010, Facebook was granted a patent on a series of aspects of its News Feed. This patent covers News Feed when the link is sent so that one user can participate in the same activities as other users. These patents encourage Facebook to take action against websites that violate its patent, such as Twitter.

One of the most popular applications on Facebook is the Photos, where users can upload albums and photos. Facebook allows users to upload an unlimited amount of photos, compared to storage services such as Photo bucket and Flickr images which limit the number of images someone can upload. In the first years, Facebook users were limited to 60 photos per album upload. In May 2009, this limit was raised to 200 photos per album.

Privacy settings can be set for individual albums that restrict group of users who can view it. For example, the privacy of an album is set so that only the user's friends can see it, while the privacy of another album is set so that all Facebook users can see it. Another feature of the Photos application is the ability to "tag", or mark users in a photo. For example, if a photo contains a user's friend, then the user can tag the friend in the photo. Such actions send a notification to the friend who marked and give them the link to see the photo.

Facebook Notes was introduced on August 22, 2006, a blog feature that allows the tag and image cultivation. Users can import blogs from Xanga, LiveJournal, Blogger, and other blogging service. Through out the week of 7

(21)

April 2008, Facebook released a Comet-based instant messaging application called "Chat" to several profiles, which allow users to communicate with friends and functions the same as the desktop-based instant messenger.

Facebook launched Gifts on February 8, 2007 that allows users to send virtual gifts to their friends that appear on the recipient's profile. Each prize worth $ 1.00 and a personal message can be attached to each gift. Dated May 14, 2007, Facebook launched Market place, which lets users send short ads free. Market place has been compared to that Craigs list by CNET, which indicates that the main difference between the two isa list that is sent in the Market place users can only be seen by users who are in the same network as the user, while the list sent on Craigs list can be seen by everyone.

Dated July 20, 2008, Facebook launched "Facebook Beta", the redesign of its user interface on multiple networks. Mini-Feed and Wall combined, profile split into tabs, and they are trying to make it look more "simple". After initially giving users a choice to switch, Facebook began to move all users to the new page version in September 2008. Date December 11, 2008, it was announced that Facebook was testing the registration process easier.

Dated June 13, 2009, Facebook introduced the feature "Usernames", ie pages can be linked using simple URLs like http://www.facebook.com/facebook compared with http://www.facebook.com/profile.php ?id = 20,531,316,728. Many new smart phones offer access to Facebook via their web browser or application. Official Facebook app launched for the iPhone OS, Android OS, and the Web OS. Nokia and Research In Motion provides Facebook application on their mobile

(22)

phone. More than 150 million active users access Facebook through mobile phones registered at 200 operators in 60 countries.

November 15, 2010, Facebook announced a service "Facebook Messenger" new. At media day, CEO Mark Zuckeberg said, "It is true that one can obtain surel@facebook.com address, but it's note mail. "Launch these features have been anticipated while before his announcement, with some observers calling it a "Gmail killer". This system, which will be rolled out to all users of the site, combines text messaging, instant messaging, email, and regular messages, and will include the same privacy settings as Facebook service. Dubbed "Project Titan", Facebook Messages takes 15 months in development.

On October 24, 2007, Microsoft announced that it had purchased a 1.6% stake in Facebook for $ 240 million, giving Facebook a value of $ 15 billion. The purchase by Microsoft include their rights to place international ads on Facebook. Month October 2008, Facebook announced that it would open up its international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. In September 2009, Facebook said that they experienced a positive cash flow for the first time.

In November 2010, according to Second Market Inc., an exchange shares of private companies, Facebook's value reaches $ 41 billion (beat eBay is thin) and became the third largest web company after Google and Amazon U.S. Facebook has been targeted as a potential candidate for an initial public offering in 2013. Traffic to Facebook increased steadily after 2009. Amount of visitors Facebook beat Google on March 13, 2010.

(23)

In March 2011, it was reported that Facebook removed approximately 20,000 profiles from the site every day for various reasons, including spam, inappropriate content and underage use, as part of its efforts to encourage cyber security. In early 2011, Facebook announced plans to move into his new office, the former Sun Micro systems campus in Menlo Park, California.

The benefits of Facebook to college students are the career interests as easy to search for job information, ease in trading and seek associates in business, can exchange ideas with ease, facilitated the exchange of information access is very good. For example when he needs something or wants to know something, he can write in status and will receive replies from peers as a medium of learning and as a medium of discussion.

Hoffman, the consumption of cigarettes and alcohol, takes the cost and the existence of a special time. While the uses of Facebook can be interspersed with doing something else. There is also an argument that explains that social networking is as dangerous as cigarettes and alcohol. Therefore, the media seemed to encourage people to go away from his world and into the limited scope of social networking. However, the side effects, would be difficult to equate Facebook with cigarettes and alcohol.

Every college students in English Diploma Faculty ff Cultural Study have account on facebook. The college students also have a private group on facebook, that is SOLIDAS ’11 class A. Solidas is abbreviation for “Student of English Diploma Association”. Every year, the college student in English Diploma Program Faculty of Cultural Study has a group on facebook, inaccordance with

(24)

the year of study. With facebook student can also collect material from the task that is given by the lecturers.

Facebook also can be used to write the travel plans of students in facebook status and can be very useful for the smooth getaway. Do not write too much detail, and do not be too impressed students write a state vulnerable. most Facebook users are not too aware of anyone who becomes his/her friend. So, students`s friends can respond to the holiday destination. Maybe students`s old friends residing in the destination city. Students can meet and get interesting information about holiday destinations with facebook friends.

Social media is one tool that connects us in cyberspace, with social media or who is familiarly called socmed we could roam even in touch with the people that we are interested in long distances though. Therefore, along with the development of human thought, the online world is now increasingly popular, both for a place to pour creativity or hobbies, business online, or simply to strengthen the friendship and interact with other individuals.

For most people, it seems Facebook has become one of the social media that they shall have, because with social media, we can not just simply interacting, but we also can take advantage of services that already provide, as well as games, forums, fan page, and so forth.

Many people think that the Cyberspace as something that is not real, in other words is called a fantasy world or false. This is understandable, because for those who interpret the sense of the Cyberspace as the world is not real or fantasy

(25)

world, they may refer to the definition of the word cyber, which means false or unreal. Cyber or cyber literally does mean "between being and not".

Neuromancer said, Cyberspace is A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts A graphic representation of data abstracted from banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the non space of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding. He also described meatspace and cyberspace as metal coins. Meatspace as the real world and cyberspace as a virtual world so they can not be separated. The word itself was popularized by Bruce Sterling and John Perry Barlow.

Cyberspace is a system operated by the form of a series of computers connected in a series that is used as a means of interaction and communication for people who use it like in the real world life. Therefore, cyberspace is another term for the Internet, it seemed to be a real world for people who can access and use it, because the Cyberspace is another designation of the term Internet and not cyber in the sense that literally means false or unreal.

Cyberspace is the electronic media of computer networks which widely used for the purpose of one-way communication and reciprocal online (connected directly). Cyberspace is an integration of various communication equipment and computer network technologies (sensors, transducers, connections, transmissions, processors, signal, controller) which can connect communication devices

(26)

(computers, mobile phones, electronic instrumentation, etc.) are scattered in interactively throughout the world.

Through access to the cyberspace, we can be traveling to all corners of the world, to interact and communicate with each other. Through access to the cyberspace too, we can learn and teach to obtain or provide information about a variety of science and just by sitting in front of a computer. We do not need to bother to buy books or other reading materials, which can be the contents of our bookshelves were crowded, even we must also collect the books as reading material to get a variety of science.

In addition, various desires or needs anything we want associated with human life, we will be able to gain access through the cyberspace as in the real world life. The experts and scholars from various disciplines of science and various educational backgrounds have poured his works through cyberspace or the internet.

Various forms and different ways also poured their works there, either in the form of writing, expression, photos / images, animations, audio / video, activities, etc., all of which may have been either of them be able to experience personally, from the results of research, investigation, learning, reading a book or other printed media, see or hear something, watching television, and so forth.

Cybercrime is a term that refers to criminal activity with a computer or computer network or facebook become a tool, target or place of crime. Included in cybercrimes include online auction fraud, check fraud, credit card fraud / carding, confidence fraud, identity fraud, child pornography, kidnapping, torture, etc..

information into the feature into the image. Of course anyone who saw your photo, will be automatically know the location where the photo was taken with ease. It can be fatal if the beholder is the cyber criminals.

Why do folks hack facebook account?

Generally there are plenty of reasons why somebody would like to hack another person Facebook account. Mother and father might want to see what their children are doing on the internet, to keep an eye on them. An ex girlfriend or boyfriend might be wondering precisely what is his / her ex doing now. A husband probably wish to verify if his wife is trustworthy or the other way round.
