Abstract
Retinopathy (DR) is the most common complication
in Diabetes Mellitus

-"o--.rnity.
9n0 the major cause of blindness in productiv"-ut"
Evidences
show that the occurrence of DR is affected by genetic "and
environment factors.
Aldose reductase (ALR2) is a rate-rimiting enzfi"
in the polyol pathway. The
activity ALR2 is significantly higher withii diabetic
pu,i*, with RD than those
without RD' The risk to have microvasculair complications
witnin tlpe-l DM patients
with high activity of
ilJ
times higher than tlrose whohave normal activity
of
ALR2 (Reddy et al., 1t^V
2008). The increasing prevalence of RD is correlated
with
the
increased level of ALf2-, m{nlv among type-2

DM patients with duration of disease
l."tt
l0
years (oishi et al., io02). r-troaims of this rtoJy
*ur to elucidate whether
JIT
the high level of aldose reductase was risk factor
for dia'betic retinopathy @Rtl"
Wpe-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in Bali. case-control design.,,,ur'ffi.6
employing 35 cases of diabetiC retinopathy and
35 controls without diabetic
retinopathy' ELISA method was used to measure
aldose reductase level. The level of
aldose reductase were
using x2 and otrr", aut" *ere analysed using t_
_analysed
independent and Mann-whitney.
ThJresult of the study showed that high level of
ALR2 was found more in RD patients than non_RD patients
(p=0,002), an indication

frat high level of ALR2 is a risk factor for RD (OR:3,S4; p=OlOOZl.
It was concluded
trat high level of ALR2 was the risk factor forlio
in Bali.
