The Power of Weapons in “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” Movie
by Peter Jackson
Immanuel Wirawan Unawekla
Abstract
In analyzing film or movie, the focus is usually placed on the characters, the most important
aspect who builds the story. Characters play very important role because they are the center
of the whole story. However, the objects or equipment that they use can also build the figure
of the character and play important role in the story. In the trilogy movie of “The Lord of The
Rings” directed by Peter Jackson, each main character has their own special weapons that
they use or carry along the story. This paper is a brief discussion of some important weapons
that have their own meaning and function. The writer will narrow down the analysis for two
weapons only: ring and swords. Using semiotic study, this discussion will focus more on
analyzing the symbol of those weapons which contain important meaning than the merely
image that the audiences watch on the screen. The interpretation will be emphasized on some
meanings of the ring and sword as weapons in the story connected to symbol meaning in the
era of middle age.
Key Words: Symbol, Sword Symbolism, Ring Symbolism
