T1 Abstract Institutional Repository | Satya Wacana Christian University: Reasons Behind Inappropriate Students’ Behavior in the English Classroom
ABSTRACT
In the English classroom sometimes the teacher finds some students doing
inappropriate behaviors. For example, the case of inappropriate behavior has also been
done by some the students in the English classroom in a vocational high school in
Salatiga and this became a reason this study was made. This study attempted to find
the answer to the research question: what are the reasons behind students’ inappropriate
behavior in the English classroom? The participants were from 2 classes (34 students)
in grade one (16 years old) in a vocational high school in Salatiga. Based on the
observations, there were 28 students who did the inappropriate behaviors in the English
classroom. The kinds of inappropriate behavior that was done were aggression,
defiance of authority, classroom disruptions and others. The 28 students were
interviewed to answer tha research question. The results showed that the students'
reasons did the inappropriate behavior in the English classroom were because they did
not like the way the teacher explained the materials. The students felt bored and sleepy
when learned English and thought that English was difficult to learn. The students still
needed a game when learning English to make them be more active so that the
sleepiness and boredom did not attack them. The teacher creativity also influenced the
students responses in the learning of English.
