CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
In Indonesia, English is one of the compulsory subjects which is taught in
all education levels, namely elementary school, junior and senior high school,
and in all departments of university. Hence, the Indonesian government always
makes effort to improve the quality of society especially adult generation, in
order to be able to confront the competition in globalization era.
Because of the importance of English, the teacher should have an
interesting method in teaching English language, so that the students are
interested in English and master the material easily. A study of method is the
study of teaching which has a big role to determine the success in education. In
this case, teacher should be able to apply various methods to present the material
to students.
There are some methods which can be used to teach English vocabulary.
One of them is Grammar Translation Method (GTM). Here, the learners typically
spend a great deal of their time looking up words in dictionary and translating
texts from the foreign language into their native language. The other method is
Total Physical Response (TPR). TPR asks students to respond physically to the
language they hear. Language processing is thus matched with physical action

(Harmer, 2002:90). It attempts to teach language through physical activity. It can

1

1

be said that TPR is a method of teaching English by using physical action to
teach a foreign language.
Usually GTM and TPR are used to teach normal children in general
school. Normal children easier to understand the materials than children with
orthopeadically handicapped, because normal children can learn the materials by
themselves. The methods used for the students in the school should be different
from general school. Children with orthopeadically handicapped have different
characteristics compared with normal children. Normal children learn by
themselves various action or behavior around them, but children with
orthopeadically handicapped actually should learn in school with special methods
(Sapariadi, 1982: 20).
The role of teachers in school for children with orthopeadically
handicapped is important. Because the teaching material should be recreated and
suitable with the students’ condition and ability individually. One example of

special method is eclectic method. Eclectic method is where techniques, activities
and feature from different method are selected without explicit reference to
program objectives (Richards and Rodgers, 1993: 158). The use of eclectic
method is seen from the activity done by the teacher and the learners in
classroom.
English is the subject in which not all SLB schools teach it. There are
different characteristics of SLB learners. SLB in YPAC Surakarta belongs to
SLB that teaches English to their learners, especially in SLB-D. SLB-D is a
special classroom for children with orthopeadically handicapped. Based on the

2

handicapped the writer is interested in conducting a research about ‘A Study On
