  ABSTRACT Eni Wahyuni : The Comparative Study Between The Students’ Mastery in Vocabulary by Listening English Song and Total Physical Response

  Application at The Sevents Grade Students of MTs AS- Syifa Wal’ain Bondan Indramayu.

  Media is important one in teaching and learning process because media is service of learning which has instructional material in students‟ environment which can give stimulate for the student to learn the subject.

  The teacher must be able to choose the method and teaching technique effectively, one of the technique is using media. Because media can help the teacher when give the material, it can make easy and increased the students to learn the English subject especially in mastery in vocabulary.

  The purpose of research from the th esis are to find out the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by listening English song and total physical response application and to find out the significant and positive comparison between the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by listening English song and total physical response application.

  The result of the research, the writer conludes that students‟ mastery in vocabulary with using total physical response application is going on well, the writer knows the data from the test, mean of student answer is 7.47, and then the students‟ achievement by using English song the mean of students answer is 6.61, it can be accumulated that the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by using total physical response application is better than the students achievement in vocabulary by using listening English song . By using t-test the writer knows score is 3.04 by significabt of 5% with df (n- 2), while n is 60 so df is 58 (60-2) with SD of significant 2.00 so can be calculatet that the result of t-test is 3.04 >2.00.

  The research knows that there is significant and positive comparison between X

2 Variable, it can be seen from the result of t- test is 3.04 >

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the problem According to todd (1987; 6), a language is a set of signals by which

  we communicate. There are a number of other general points that are worth making about language. First, human language is not only a vocal are system of communication. It can be expressed in writing, with the result that it is not limited in time or space. Secondly, each language is both arbitrary and systematic. Based on crystals‟ statement (1994; 2) language is a result of the normal process of education and social and social development.

  Language is the most vital instrument human life. It is clear that human cannot live alone, because people in social life and communication.

  People as a social human need each other, they life together and also communication is very important to understand each other, they use language for communication, so language is very important in social life. According to as Horn Bys‟ dictionary (1987: 473) “ Language is human and not instincitive method communicating ideas, feeling, and desires by means of sounds. ( Pei& Gaynor 1954: 119) language is a system of communicating by sound, i.e., through the organs of speech and hearing, among human beings af a certain group or community, using vocal symbol possesing arbitary conventional meaning.

  According to Ali Alkuli ( 1976 : 10 ) that english is an international language. Language is very needed to be learned as a tool of communicating with the other nation. Especially English is known and used by people in every country as anative language , second language,or foreign language.

  Based the statement above, the writer draw a conclusion that language is tool used for expressing feeling, ideas, opinion, and trought to other people. English is first language in other country and as an international language, in addition English is second language in educational area especially Indonesia, so it is very important rule of human life because of this fact the number people who speak english always all aspect in our life. If we want to know about the new global information which is published by using English, we should understand what the news tells about. So it is necessary when we want to know all the global information, we should learn English. Not only for Britain and American, english is also language of human beings. Because of this fact, the numbers of people who speak English are always increased year by year.

  Hornby, AS( 1994: 1425) vocabulary is total number of words that companies a textbook in foreign language. Nunan (1974: 118) states that vocabulary is an important element in the acquistion of a second language, thus it must be owned by each person as language learning. Nowadays in Indonesia, English has become the foreign language which is to be learnt and teach by the students of kindergarten, elementary school from the first year up to the sixty year, junior high school, senior high school and university. So learning vocabulary is very important to give students preparation to keep on their studies and to master language one must learn enough vocabulary to express himself/herself in reading, listening, speaking and writing.

  Nowadays in Indonesia, English has become the foreign language which is to be learnt and teach by the students of kindergarten, elementary school from the first year up to the sixty year, junior high school, senior 2004, the function of English as follows :

  In educational context, the function of English is an instrument to communicate in assessing information, and in daily context as an instrument to guide interpersonal relationship, to exchange information and to ejnjoy the esthetic of a language in English culture.

  The English instruction has aims as follows : 1. Improving the ability of communication in that language, oral or written. The ability of communication includes listening, speaking,

  2. Creating the awareness about the ucefulness and importance of English as one of foreign language to become the main instrument of learning.

  3. Improving the understanding about the connection among languages and cultures, and enlarging the perpective of culture and involve themselves in the various cultures.

  According to curriculum 2006 explained that the English instruction has the aims, they are :

  1. Improving the communication skill on limited oral language to accompany action in school context.

  2. Possesising the awareness about the nature of English and the necessary of English for improving competition in global community.

  According to Lo and Li cited in Scoepp (2001) that “ Songs provide a break from classroom routine, and that learning English trough songs develops a non-theatening classroom atmosphere in which the four language skills can be enhanced”. So , the song is way to give relax

  Asher (

  1986:10) defines that “ The TPR method is a language learning method based on the coordination of speech and action. It is useful technique in developing students mastery vocabulary and this method the students listen and respond to the spoken target language of their teacher.

  The writer tried to solve the students‟ difficulties by means of implementing the method of learning that is the Total Physical Response (TPR) method.Honeslty speaking, the use of this method can absolutely help solve the students‟ difficulties. The students can understand certain forms of centences , and they are able to produce some sentences In this situation,the writer interested to implement the TPR method that is supposed to be suitable method to solve the students‟ difficulties in mastery vocabulary. In this case , the writher give another ways to teach english vocabulary, those are Using listening english song and total physical response to teach english vocabulary. Beside to motivate the students , the writer hope through song and total physical response the sudents will be easy to study english vocabulary. And the writer want to know are there any different between the students mastery vocabulary taught by using songs and using total physical response.

  Based on the explanation above , the writer take the title of this thesis is “ The comparative study between the students‟ mastery in the first grade of Mts As- Syifa Wal’ain Bondan Indramayu.

B. The Identification of The Problem

  The problem in this research is classified into the following section:

  The Field of the research of this thesis is a vocabulary.

  2. The Approach of The Research The approach of the research in this thesis is the quantitative research.

  Researching the area and found the problems there. From this approach will be known about the result of the research by looking the statistical analysis.

  3. The kind of the problem The title of the thesis is the comparative study between the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by using listening English songs and Total physical response. So kinds ofthe problems are as follows: a.

  The students are difficult in mastery vocabulary b.

  The Students are lack in mastery vocabulary c. The students are difficult to understanding English vocabulary

  The title of this thesis is the comparative study between the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by using listening English songs and Total physical response. So the main problem of this thesis is that students difficulties on understanding and mastery vocabulary.

C. The Limitation of The Problem

  In this research, the writer would like to limit the main problem which has correlation with title of the thesis, that is the comparative study between the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by listening English songs and Total Physical response methode. In this research the writer choose the material about body.

D. The Questions of The Research 1.

  How is the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by using listening English songs.

2. How is the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by using Total physical response.

  3. Is there any positive and significant comparison between the students‟ mastery in vocabulary by using listening English songs and Total

E. The Aims of The Research

  The aims of research can be seen below :

  1. To find out the students ‟ mastey in vocabulary by using listening English songs.

  2. To find out the students ‟ mastery in vocabulary by using Total physical response.

  3. To find out the significant comparison between the students ‟ mastery in vocabulary by using listening songs and total physical response?

  The researcher hopes the research can be usefull for: a.

G. The Frame of Thinking

  Learning is the most vital key term in every kind of education effort for without learning there will not education. There are many educators here latest a few definition of learning. So, learning is caused by existence of experience. The behavior changes of skill, attitude, knowledge, comprehension and appreciation. Learning will be effective if the learner experience and deal with the learning process it self.

  Burton (1990: 278) stated “ your vocabulary is the range of words that you can use”. The large it is the better will your performance in all aspect of English language work be especially for people in which English is as their foreign language, knowing vocabulary is a must for them.

  Vocabulary is one the language components in order to carry out communication or to make up a language , thus the English vocabulary is therefore very crucial in the process of learning of foreign language.

  Learning in language is not easy to do it. It‟s major undertaking that meaning and this is make the students lazy to learning English espessially vocabulary. That condition of course makes the students always difficult in learning English mareover the students got bored with common technique.

  According to Peter Kline in Gordon Dryden & Jeannette Vos‟s book (2001:22) that “ Belajar akan lebih efektif dan menyenangkan jika di

  lakukan dalam suasana menyenangkan

  ” ( Study will be effective if done by fun)..

  English teacher in Junior High scool is hoped to use the song to help the students to increasing their motivation to learn the foreign language ( English ) , including at the Junior High scool Mts As-Syifa Wal’ain Bondan Indramayu.

  Beside that the writer knows that in teaching vocabulary by using listening English songs and Total physical response are very influential and writer to do research of the comparative study between using listening English songs and Total physical response o n the students‟ English mastery vocabulary.

H. Assumption

  This research was started on August 02 , 2012. In this research the researcher found the students problem, they are : students difficult to pronounce the word exactly and also they can‟t understand about vocabulary well. These are caused by :

  1. As the people of Indramayu the students always use their mother tongue with their family, friend, and their teachers.

  2. Less in mastery Indonesian vocabulary, it is caused by the first cause.

  3. Limited knowledge on English vocabulary.

  4. Limited English learning instruments.

  5. Less motivation on learning English.

  Those problems should be solved by the teacher. The students of the yunior high school need a new method of learning and they also need the other instruments of learning such as picture cards, scrabble, poster, cassettes, CD, etc. the writer tried to apply the TPR (total physical response) to teach English for the students. As we know that children are more quickly and are less able to keep themselves motivated on task they find difficult. Children often seem less embarrassed than adults at talking in a new language, and their lack of inhibition seems to help them get more native like accent (Cameron : 2001).

  Researcher chooses

  MTs Syifa Wala’in Bondan for her research,

  because researcher found the students difficulties on mastery in vocabulary. The causing are : students only speaking in bahasa Indramayu,

  English vocabulary,limited English learning instruments, and less motivation on learning English.

  From the problems above can be known that students are not being motivated to study English. So in this eresearch the researcher not only wants to prove the students, vocabulary skill but researcher also wants to prove the students response by using song.

  • June 22 , 2003 proves that the Solichah‟s research on April 22 application of English song on the students, motivation at MTs Syifa

  

Wala’in Bondan contributes about 40%. It is a succicient correlation. She

  explained that the students are motivated when they listening English song before study the material which was related with the song (2003:65).

  Excited from Rosandi‟s (2009:73) thesis which titled in Student‟s responses to use English song for improving English pronunciation at Eight

  MTs Syifa Wala’in Bondan, show that the influence of

  using English song for improving English pronunciation is 771%. It is categorized on the high classification of correlation. It means that the English song is given a big contribution on improving students pronunciation skill.

  In Puji‟s tehesis (2010:83) which titled the influence of listening English song on the students speaking skill at the sixth year students of SD

  

Negeri 1 Kerandong Kabupaten Cirebon, show that the influence of using

  English song for improving students, speaking skill is only 5%, it is categorized on the law classification of correlation.

  To teach vocabulary the teacher needs a new method. One of the methods is using TPR, by using it students can improve their vocabulary skill and understand about the subject deeply. TPR is one of the method for teaching English. Ehildren received the learning enthusiastically when they were studying English by using TPR (total physical response) method the students difficulties on learning English.

  Therefore, in writing this thesis, the writer will discuss about he sixth year the students, difficulties are becoming the problem in writing this thesis. Besides, the writer will also measure the appropriate of using TPR (total physical response) method on the instructional process and the researcher will look for information about the efforts to help students study between the students mastery in vocabulary by listening English song and total physical response application at the sevents grade students of MTs

  syifa wal’ain bondan Indramayu.
