  ABSTRAK

  Skripsi ini berjudul An Analysis Of Leading Character’s Conflict in

  Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook yang merupakan suatu pembahasan mengenai

  konflik dalam kehidupan Allie. Dimana konfliknya tersebut terbagi menjadi tiga bagian, yaitu Allie’s internal conflict, Allie’s external conflict with Noah (her boyfriend) and Allie’s external conflict with her parents. Disini dijelaskan bahwa konflik itu bisa terjadi karena adanya pilihan yang tidak dapat terpenuhi, dimana hubungan Allie dengan Noah tidak mendapat restu dengan orang tua Allie dikarenakan oleh perbedaan status, Allie dari keluarga mampu dan Noah tidak. Sehingga keadaan tersebut menimbulkan konflik dalam hubungannya dengan orang tuanya sendiri dan Noah. Penulis mengacu kepada teori yang dikemukakan oleh Tennyson. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam menganalisis masalah dalam skripsi ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dari hasil analisis, penulis memperoleh kesimpulan bahwa akar permasalahan dari konflik tersebut adalah dikarenakan perbedaan status dan bentuk penyelesaiannya adalah sangat diperlukan mengikuti kata hati dalam apapun yang dilakukan. v

  ABSTRACT

  The title of this thesis is An Analysis of Leading Character’s Conflict In Nicholas

  Sparks’ The Notebook which is a kind of Allie’s conflict in her life. The conflict is

  devided into three such as Allie’s internal conflict, Allie’s external conflict with Noah (her boyfriend) and Allie’s external conflict with her parents. The conflict can happen because the choices cannot be fullfilled, where Allie’s parents do not agree with her decision because different status, Allie comes from a rich family and Noah comes from a poor family. It causes conflicts between her parents and Noah. The writer uses Tennyson’s theory for this thesis. The method of this thesis is descriptive qualitative. From the analysis, the writer finds that the conclusion of this analysis because there is a different status and to solve this conflict depends on your heart. vi

  CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

  Despite the tradition of regarding literature as a fine art, literature is imaginative writing. If literature is not simply imaginative, fictional, or poetic discourse, what then, makes a given written work literary? A common, and commonsensial, response is that literature employs a special form of language, more evocative and “connotative” than that used in other forms of writing; in this sense, literature is “fine” or creative writing, no matter what the content. Wellek (1977:94) says,”Literature is a social institution, using as its medium language, a social creation.” Literature is a term used to describe a spoken or written material anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific work.

  Literature refers to compotitions that tell stories, dramatize situations, express emotions, and advocate ideas. Literature helps us grow, both personally and intellectually. It provides an objective base for knowledge and understanding. In literature is known the kinds of literature as prose fiction, poetry, drama, and non fiction prose.

  Prose fiction or narrative fiction, includes myths, parables, novels, or romances and short stories. Novel is a long and fictional narrative prose, usually in the form of story that has the intrinsic and ekstrinsic elements. Wellek (1989:282) says,”Novel is a picture of real life and manners and of the time in which it is written.” The statement leads us that novel is written and presents a documentary picture of life that every scene happening in a novel is the real portrayal in the real life.
