ABSTRACT
This research aims to analyze teachers’ perception about the use of Indonesian and
English in EFL classroom. It will also find out about how teachers practice their beliefs in the
real context of teaching-learning process. There is a main question which will be discussed in
this research. The question is, “What are teachers’ perceptions about using English and
Indonesian during the teaching learning process in the EFL classroom of Senior High School
students?”. There are also three major theories from experts that will be used as the foundation of
this research. The theories are definitions of perception, the use of L1 in EFL classroom, and the
use of L2 only in EFL classroom. The participants in this research are three English teachers
from a private Senior High School in Salatiga. Observation and interview are the chosen method
of data collection for this research. Four major findings will also be discussed in details later.
Those findings are teachers’ experiences and beliefs about the use of Indonesian and English in
EFL classroom, the use of English in EFL classroom, the use of Indonesian in EFL classroom,
and teachers’ respond toward students’ use of Indonesian.
