Students’ Motivation to Learn English at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Satya Wacana
Christian University, Salatiga
Mevilia Corputty
Abstract
This study is about students’ motivation to learn English at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK)
at Satya Wacana Christian University. The participants of study were 52 students who took
English course (Integrated Course) in Semester 1 and 2 in 2009/2010 academic year offered by
the Faculty of Health Sciences. The data were collected by using a questionnaire and the students
were asked to rate themselves using four-point scale according to how well the items described
them while taking Integrated Course. The data was analyzed based on intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation using Microsoft Excel (2007) to figure out the mean of each type of motivation. The
result showed that extrinsic motivation is higher than intrinsic motivation although the difference
not significant. Thus, it was implying that most of FIK students learn English for external
reasons. Finally, based on the findings some suggestions and recommendation for teaching
English have been proposed.
Key words: English foreign language learning, motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
Introduction
Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK) is one of the faculties in Satya Wacana Christian
University which offers English course to new students in the first year. They are required to
take this course before taking core subjects. Based on their curriculum, the purposes of training
the students in English are (1) to build students’ confidence, courage and sense of interest of the
English language material presented, and (2) to improve students’ fluency in English actively or
passively. English has become one of the main focuses for FIK students at the beginning of their
study because there are many teaching materials presented in English. Therefore, it is important
for them to master the basic English skills since English is not their first language.
As a global or world language, English is used as the medium to communicate with
people from different countries. McKay (2002) supported the idea that “the primary function of
English as a global language is to enable speakers to share with others their ideas and culture.”
