ABSTRACT
Yuliana Indriati. C0306058. An Analysis of Instruction Utterances and Responses in
the Movie The King’s Speech. Thesis: English Department of Faculty of Letter and Fine
Arts. Sebelas Maret University.
The research is conducted to analyze the instruction utterances found in the
movie The King’s Speech based on the politeness strategy. It explores the politeness
strategy to deliver the instruction, the politeness strategy to respond the instruction, and
the factors influencing the choice of the strategy.
The research uses pragmatics study to analyze the speech act of instruction. It
also employs the descriptive qualitative research. All of the instruction utterances in the
movie The King’s Speech are taken as the data. There are 46 data which have been
analyzed by Brown and Levinson theory of Politeness strategy.
The findings of the analysis are as follows: First, the characters in the movie The
King’s Speech employ four politeness strategies to deliver the instructions. They are bald
on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record strategy.
Second, the characters in the movie The king’s Speech respond the instructions in
verbal and non-verbal form. They apply four politeness strategies to give verbal responses
to the instructions. They are positive politeness, bald on record, off record, and negative
politeness strategy. Meanwhile, the characters respond the instructions by doing act in the
non-verbal responses.
Third, there are several factors influencing the speakers to choose the strategy. To
deliver the instruction, the use of bald on record strategy is influenced by the expert
power, the legitimate power, and the close relationship between participants. Then, the
use of positive politeness strategy is influenced by the factor of competing goals. The
speakers having social distance with the hearers and a big rank of imposition tend to use
negative politeness strategy. Last, off record strategy is used when the speaker finds that
the size of imposition is greater than that afforded by the negative politeness strategy. To
respond the instructions, the use of politeness strategy is influenced by the factor of
competing goals. Bald on record strategy is influenced by the close relationship between
participants and the legitimate power. The hearers use off record strategy to increase the
force of the message while they respond the instruction. Then, negative politeness
strategy is influenced by the factor of social distance.
The research is expected to be beneficial for the readers in studying the politeness
strategy of instruction. It is also suggested that other researchers conduct other studies
about instruction done by less power participant to superior one in order to know more
about real description of politeness strategy in today’s communication.
