ABSTRACT
Background: The utilization of natural resources causes environmental pollution -air, water, ground pollution.
One of the chemical compounds used by human is lead (Pb = plumbum) which is poisonous in all forms and
harmful. It damages the nervous sistem kidneys, reproductive sistem, endocrine sistem and heart with various
effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lead acetate on the fertility of male mice.
Design and method: This study used samples of 80 male mice aged 4 weeks and 80 fertile female mice.
Furthermore, 80 male mice were divided into 4 groups to receive one of the following treatments: 0 ppm
lead acetate treatment (P-I), 400 ppm (P-II), 1000 ppm (P-III), and 2000 ppm (P-IV) once daily for 42 days,
during treatment all mice were fed on the same diet. On day 42t, each male mice was mated with a mating
female mice. After getting pregnant, the female mice were separated from the male mice. During
maintenance the number of gestation and the litter size were recorded. Chi square test was used to analyze

the number of gestation, the hypothesis accepted if p d” 0.05, coefficient of contingency was used to
determine the degree of relationship. F test was applied for litter size analysis, hypothesis was accepted if p
d” 0.05. T-test was applied to find out the difference among the treated groups.
Result: The number of pregnant female mice for group of PI, P-II, P-III, and P-IV were 20, 16, 12, and 12
respectively. Statistical analysis showed that the lead concentration at 1000 and 2000 ppm resulted in the
decrease in the number of pregnant females (P
