By MM This was my first read by this author. I could not put this book down (and therefore read it today). The timing of events was perfectly sequenced, as I was catching up with one part of the story and needed to know what was happening with the other characters, it was in the next chapter...I was too engaged to pause. It was disturbing, upsetting and timely as it is a subject that is nightmarish but so well laid out, that the insight into another persons nightmare was probably why it was so gripping. I like a story where the characters can fall apart and then put their lives back together again, grow & change. I also like a story where the good in people prevails. It was like getting hooked on House of Cards and watching 3 episodes in a night... I don't remember the last time I picked up a book and read it straight through except when I am on vacation! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Suspenseful and exciting summer reading By vanman If you're looking for engaging, suspenseful reading this summer, definitely consider "The Boy and the Bastard". You won't be disappointed! It's the story of a little boy who's kidnapped from the streets of suburban Boston in the late 1970's. His father, a successful investor at the top of his game, is devastated by the disappearance of his son and becomes consumed with finding him. As the story unfolds, it's an open question whether the father's search is more for the lost boy or an attempt to find his true self again.
The plot line is definitely captivating with lots of twists and turns and surprises right up until the end. I wasn't able to put it down and ended up staying up late to read the second half all in one sitting! The story is also entertaining because of the author's careful attention to detail throughout the book. It's a story complete with references to late 70's culture and places throughout eastern Massachusetts. It's definitely a fun read.

The author Russell Newell, does a great job with his first novel, “The Boy and the Bastard” and pulls you in from page one!
