1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the writer explains about background of the study, statements of problem, objectives of the study, limitation of the study, significance of the study, and definition of the key terms.

I.1. Background of the Study

Since the great development of the world has been started, English has become the most popular language which is used by enormous number of people in many aspects. One of them can be seen from using language in literary works, such as poem, drama, prose, short story, and novel.

Literary works represent the condition and employs historical moments that exist in the region, country, and world as well. In this case, literary work manifests that situation through its various forms, such as short stories, novel, songs and dramas. One kind of the media that can be used to improve learning English about songs. Songs can make the experience of learning English enjoyable. In addition, songs also contain potential materials to facilitate English listening ability, for example: listening to new vocabulary.

However, we can’t deny that music is always identical with songs. Then, songs are always identical with lyrics which are mostly in a form of poem. The music of poem contributed item in its meaning and emotional effect. Consciously or unconsciously, we can learn poetry through the lyrics of songs. And it will improve our English, especially in vocabulary in which we can learn new words, and poetry as one of literary works.

Beckley (1960, in Waluyo 2001) stated that the keynote of the poetry lesson is enjoyment. Many students often get bored when they had to learn a poem. The available source of poetry, generally the old poem, seemed very difficult to comprehend. That’s why song could create enjoyment and motivate the student to study. The simple words, uncomplicated lyrics and easy listening music will attract them more.

Poets who write lyrics have their own ways to express their feelings, intentions, emotions, and imagination through the words in their lyrics. Some poets choose to write lyrics in common language or simple diction, but some others prefer writing lyrics by using beautiful languages. Either using simple diction or beautiful language, every lyric has its own theme and message that beautify the song.

People who listen the song or read the lyric face some difficulties in understanding what is the meaning and what is the message that the poets want to

convey. Although people could still enjoy the song without understanding the meaning and the message, people will get more pleasure if they read the lyric to find out more about the song through the meaning and the message.

There are many advantages from study of literature, one of them is that we can actually be able to travel own mind through a series of image scanning, like imaginations. A person is capable of imagining things because he explores his mind through visual that may actually happen or not. In conclusion, literature is something that gives us an idea of how we work as a person, as an artist, as a writer, as a sculpture, and or as a being. In this case, the writer interested in analyzing the meaning and message from the song, because the writer wants to know and understand about songs. Moreover, when we try to find the meaning or message from a song, we can learn more about literature, especially poetry, we can add new vocabulary and we can add new knowledge from poetry. The first study was done by Devie Aristyanti (2009), and her topic is find theme and meaning and message in Elton John’s songs “Candle In The Wind” based on the death of Lady Diana.

Furthermore, from the above illustration, the writer is eager to understand the meaning and the message in the lyric of the songs.
