ABSTRACT

Fathika Azka Rahmani. K2210026. Correlation between Habit in Listening,

Grammar Mastery, and Listening Skill of the Eighth Grade Students of

SMP N 7 Surakarta on the Academic Year of 2015/ 2016. English

Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University 2017.

The objectives of this study is finding out the correlation between (1) habit in listening and listening skill; (2) grammar mastery and listening skill; (3) habit in listening and grammar mastery simultaneously and listening skill.

This study used quantitative approach with correlational method. The population was all eighth grade students of SMP N 7 Surakarta. The sample was class VIII D consisting of 30 students. The sample was chosen by using cluster sample random sampling. In collecting data, test is used for testing grammar mastery and listening skill and questionnaire is used for testing habit in listening. Regression and Correlation techniques, both single and multiple, were used for analyzing data.

The findings at the level of significance α= 0.05 show that (1) there is a positive correlation between habit in listening and listening skill (r x1y = 0.3297); (2) there is a positive correlation between grammar mastery and listening skill (r x2y = 0.4734); and (3) there is a positive correlation between habit in listening and grammar mastery simultaneously and listening skill (R x12y = 0.5958

). The students’ habit in listening makes 10.74% effective contribution to their listening skill, and grammar mastery make 24.76% effective contribution to their listening skill. Meanwhile habit in listening and grammar mastery simultaneously makes 35.50% effective contribution to their listening skill.

It is evident that habit in listening and grammar mastery, both partially and simultaneously, are vital in listening skill. Therefore, strengthening grammar mastery and designing learni ng activities that improving students’ listening habit are strictly necessary to improve listening skill.
