ABSTRACT

  Compliment is a part of daily conversations. Compliment is used to show solidarity, or as a reward for someone who has done something good, or to increase motivation in someone’s jobs. Compliment has a lot of meanings and purposes based on people’s needs. Every person may have different ways to give and accept responses depending on situations and maybe also the purposes of giving and accepting compliments. In this research, the writer is interested in doing a comparative research on compliments in American and Indonesian movies.“The Pursuit of Happyness” and “Rumah Tanpa Jendela” using qualitative analysis by adopt ing Yu’s theory of compliments. The researcher found that there are some similarities and differences in the way people give responses to the compliment in to the two movies used in this study and show the cultural influences.

  Pujian adalah bagian dari percakapan sehari

• – hari. Pujian digunakan untuk menunjukkan solidaritas, atau sebagai penghargaan untuk seseorang yang telah melakukan sesuatu dengan baik, atau untuk menambah motivasi di dalam pekerjaan. Pujian memiliki banyak arti dan tujuan tergantung kepada kebutuhan. Setiap orang memiliki cara yang berbeda-bedauntuk memberi dan menerima respon tergantung pada situasi dan mungkin juga tujuan memberi dan menerima pujian. Didalam penelitian ini penulis tertarik untuk melakukan penelitian pada pujian di film Amerika dan film Indonesia. Di dalam penelitian ini, penulis tertarik untuk melakukan perbandingan penelitian di

  “The Pursuit of Happyness” dan “Rumah Tanpa Jendela” menggunakan analisis kualitatif dengan teori pujian berdasarkan Yu, penulis menemukan hasil bahwa ada beberapa persamaan dan perbedaan dalam cara memberikan tanggapan pujian pada dua film yang digunakan dalam studi ini dan memperlihatkan pengaruh budaya.
