In struggling for completing this thesis, I would like to thank Jesus Christ who
has blessed me. I want to thank my parents who always support me both

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the benefits of using narrow reading
in learning vocabulary. The main focuses in this study include the aspect that the
students’ improvement in their vocabulary and their motivation toward the using of
narrow reading. The participants of this study were two students from the Reading
Across Genres course. The instruments used in this research were the vocabulary tests

and the reading materials taken from The Jakarta Post which covered Antasari
Azhar’s case. Overall, after analyzing and comparing their results in the pre-test and
post-test it shows that students had improved to learn English language vocabulary
using narrow reading. They had shown better results in the post-test compared with
the pre-test. Based on this study, it can be said, using narrow reading to learn English
language vocabulary was very beneficial and could improve the students’ vocabulary.
