that the numbers in types of process were: Material Process (56.55%), Mental
Process (13.1%), Relational Process (24.8%), Verbal Process (3.45%), and
Existential Process (2.1%). It means that Material process is the dominant type
of process used in Ravenna’s utterances (55.56%). The reason why material

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A.

Background of the Study
Language is the principal means whereby we conduct our social

lives. When it is used in contexts of communication, it is bound up with culture in
multiple and complex ways.
One part of culture is the language. Language as a meaning has a very
important function in people daily life. People need language to socialize with
others because they don’t want to get isolated. According to Halliday (2002) one
of the functions of language is to provide for interaction between people, by
allowing the expression of statuses, judgments, and the like; and this includes
participation in linguistic interaction. Language itself defines as the roles which
people may take situations in which they are communicating with one another.
In our daily life, language has many functions in order to help people in
communication. And all the functions of language were arranged in Sistemic
Functional Grammar (SFL). SFL is a theory about language as a resource for
making meaning based on a context of situation and a context of culture
developed by Halliday (Halliday, 1994)
According to SFL, there are three kinds of language functions called
Metafunction as one of gender in talk of language (Aragh, 2011: 25), they are
Interpersonal, Ideational, and Textual Function (Christope, 2001: 1504).
Ideational function describing about experinces and according to Rahmah

1

(2012:9) there is a study in Ideational function called transitivity. Transitivity is a
set of grammatical System which construes the world of experience into set of
Process (Halliday in Caili, 2005: 111).
In Transitivity, there are processes which are used to analyze the clause.
In this study, the object that will be analized is a film entitled “Snow White and
The Huntsman”. The movie released on 2012. In the epic action-adventure Snow
White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer
than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) out to destroy her. But what the wicked
ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been
training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) dispatched to kill
her. Sam Claflin joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White's
beauty and power.
(C) Universal Pictures.(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1735898/synopsis).

This study specially focus on analysing the character of “Ravenna” played
by “Charlize Therron”. Ravenna, known also as the Evil Queen, is the selfish and
tyrant ruler of Britain, who learns that her stepdaughter, Snow White, is destined
to surpass her as the "Fairest One of All". However, upon learning that the only
way to remain in power is by consuming Snow White's heart, Ravenna recruits a
Huntsman to capture and kill the young princess in exchange she tells him that she
can bring his wife back from the dead, which is a lie.

Before this thesis, there were some thesis which also analyzed process of
transitivity system. Some of them have researched process in movie which relate
to this study werePratiwi,Siska(2012),Process Of A Schizophrenic’s Dialogues In
A Beautiful Mind Movie and Ginting,Ananda Putrianty(2011),Process in Movie
Dialogues Of Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince.A thesis,Faculty Of
Language and Arts,State University Of Medan (Unpublished).
One of them has researched process in speech which relate to this study is
Sitorus,Muhammad Anshor(2011),The President Barrack Obama’s speech in his
visit to Indonesia.A thesis,Faculty Of Language and Arts,State University Of
Medan (Unpublished).
The writer make this movie becomes her study because this movie has a
good acting of the actors and the actress and got many awards. The writer
interested in analyzing the process of the Ravenna character because usually the
process of uttereces by a person influences what he/she acts.

B.

The Problems of the Study
Based on the background of the study, the writer formulatees research

problems as the followings:
1.

What are the types of process uttered by the witch in “Snow White and The
Huntsman”movie?

2.

What’s the most dominant process uttered by the witch character in“Snow
White and The Huntsman”movie?

3.

Why does the witch use that process most dominantly?

4

C.

The Scope of the Study
This study focuses on analyzing the process of witch’s dialogues found in

Snow White and The Huntsman movie. And the data will be analyzed by Process.
Process is the verb of the utterances. In this movie, the witch is played by Ravenna
as the supporting character.

D.
1.

The Objectives of the Study
To find out the types of process which are uttered by Ravenna as the witchin
Snow White and The Huntsman movie.

2.

To find out the most dominant type process uttered by Ravenna as thewitchin
Snow White and The Huntsmanmovie.

3.

To find out the reason why the witch uses that process dominantly.

E. The Significance of the Study
The findings of this thesis are expected to be useful for:
1.

Students especially linguistics students to increase the understanding about
the process in transitivity system.

2.

Researchers to use them as reference to conduct other related researches.

3.

Giving contribution to others to increase knowledge, functional grammar in
Linguistics field.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

A.

Conclusions
After describing the process of transitivity system and analyzing them,

there are some conclusions as follow:
1.

All types of process of transitivity system occurred in Ravenna’s dialogue
from Snow White and The Huntsman movie, namely material process,
mental process, relational process, verbal process and existential process.

2.

The dominant process in Ravenna’s dialogue from Snow White and The
Huntsman movie was material process (clauses 82, 56,55%).

3.

The reason why material process was the most dominant process was
because Ravenna did many action scenes in the movie. Then the material
process influence her act become action scene.

B.

Suggestions
Based on the conclusions given, the following suggestion are needed to be

considered:
1. It is suggested to other students to make a deeper analyzing about this study
2. It is suggested to researcher who wants to analyze other aspects of lexico
grammar theme/rheme or mood/residue that applied to other texts.
