CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
Communication is very important. Human needs a means of communication
to fulfill the social needs. Language is one of the means of communication. With the
communication, human will be able to interact each other. The development of
language relates to how people use language in their activities. In their social life they
use certain language for communication. Usually language that they can understand is
representing certain language in their community. As a result, people can not be
separated from language use in their communication.
To support the communication, nowadays variations of media are developed
including electronic media to the printed one. Printed media provide information
which can be read by the users, for example: newspaper, letter, magazine, etc. On the
other hand, electronic media provide information which can be seen and heard by the
users. They are television, radio, radar, telephone, computer, etc.
A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a list of
instructions. In practical terms, a computer program might include anywhere from a
dozen instructions to many millions of instructions for something like a word
processor or web browser. It can also execute billions of instructions every second
and nearly never make a mistake over years of operation. The windows operating

system is developed and maintained by Microsoft. Windows uses a graphical user
interface to make it easier for people to use the computer.
There are some special terms or words in computer program, for instance, we
often look at the term “bookmark”. If we look the word at the dictionary, we cannot
find it, but most people know about it. Bookmark derives from the word ‘book’ and
‘mark’. There is morphological process of how the word “bookmark” is formed. The
first the word is trimmed in the end of word. It remains the word ’book-’, while the
second word is trimmed in the front of the word and remains the word ’-mark’. The
word ’book’ and ’mark’ is then joined into a word ‘’bookmark”. It means the
electronic note of the browser, which contains addresses of place. The other example
is term “auto text”. Auto text is formed by the word ’auto’ and ’text’. There is
morphological process of how the word “auto text” is formed. The first word is
trimmed in the end of word and it remains the word ’auto-’, while the second word is
trimmed in the front of the word and remains the word ’-text’. The word ’auto’ and
’text’ is then joined becomes a word “auto text”. It means a set of assignments in the
form of name statements.
That is important to understand the terms of each community. It is intended to

get proper word to show the intention. New word formation is intended to get more
clearly intention and meaning. So we need to create new words. The form of new
words that used by people has purpose to get proper intention. So they can
communicate or do interactions with others community easier and can avoid miss
understanding.

3

The new word formation will develop according to social needs that can
make easier to communicate with the others. The new word formation will become
the fair matter. In this research, the writer will try to analyze the process of new word
formation especially on the compounding words in Windows program.

B. Previous Study
In this research, the writer is not the first person who analyses about
morphological process, but it does not mean that the writer only plagiarizes the other
research. As a description, the writer will show the previous study.
The research that relates to the writers study has been done by Hartini (2005)
entitled “Morphological Analysis on the Internet” on her research. She analyzed word
formation and the meaning of the words in internet.

This research is different from the above research. Based on the previous
research, the writer tries to analyze new word formation in the windows program
which has not been conducted by another research. The other research is done by
Hidayati (2004) entitled “Slang Use by Prostitute Ticket’s Scalper in Kopeng
(Morphological and Semantic Analysis). She analyzed word formation and the
meaning of the words used by prostitute ticket’s scalper in Kopeng.

C. Problem Statement
Based on the background of the study, the writer formulates the problem as
follows:

4

1. What are the types of compounding words in the Windows XP program
based on the theory of morphology?
2. What are the meanings of the words in Windows XP program?

D. Limitation of the Problem
It is important to limit the area of the study to concern on one object of study
and to get comprehension deeply.

In conducting this research, the writer limits the problems that are going to be
discussed. This research deals only analyses on the compounding words in the
Windows XP program.

E. The Objective of Study
Based on research, the writer has some objectives as follows:
1. To describe the types of compounding words used in Windows XP program.
2. To explain the meaning of the compounding words in Windows XP program.

F. Benefit of the Study
The writer expects this research would provide some benefits that are as
follows:
1. Theoretically
The result of the research will be a contribution for the study of Morphology.

5

2. Practically
The study will increase the knowledge on understanding about new word
formation in windows XP program.

G. Research Paper Organization
The writer organizes this research paper in order to make easier to understand.
There are five chapters in this research paper:
Chapter I is introduction consisting of background of the study, previous of
the study, the problem statement, limitation of the problem, objectives of the study,
and benefit of the study.
Chapter II is underlying theory consisting of the history of windows XP
program, morphological concept, word formation process the notion of compounding,
and concept of semantics.
Chapter III is the research method consisting of type research, object of the
study, source of the data, method of collecting data, and technique of data analysis.
Chapter IV is data analysis. The research presents the data and data analysis in
the chapter.
Chapter V is conclusion and suggestion.
