Suffix Some In English: A Morphosemantic Study.
ABSTRACT
This study focuses on the morphological and semantic analysis of suffix –
some. The analysis covers the discussion regarding the elements of words and
how the suffix characterizes the base through the exploration of meaning relations
of the containing-some-words in the data. The linguistic theories employed in this
research are set to serve the characteristics of the data. The data itself is taken
from the British National Corpus (BNC).
Based on the analysis, some results can be summarized here. Suffix –some
can serve as adjective and noun forming suffixes. As an adjective forming suffix,
-some can attach to noun, verb, and adjective. As for noun forming suffix, -some
can attach to combining form, prefix, and noun. The elements to which –some
attaches serve as the base and it may be bound or free root. The result also shows
that there are irregular meaning productivity as the context affect the meaning of
the words under the study.

Penelitian ini berfokus pada analisis morfologis dan semantis terhadap
sufiks –some. Analisis yang dilakukan meliputi pembahasan mengenai elemenelemen pembentuk kata serta bagaimana sufiks tersebut mengkarakterisasikan
kata dasar melalui eksplorasi relasi makna dari kata-kata yang berakhiran some.
Teori-teori linguistik yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini disesuaikan dengan
karakteristik data. Data tersebut diambil dari British National Corpus (BNC).
Berdasarkan analisis yang telah dilakukan, dapat disimpulkan beberapa
temuan. Sufiks –some bisa berperan sebagai sufiks pembentuk adjektifa dan
nomina. Sebagai sufiks pembentuk adjektifa, -some bisa melekat pada nomina,
verba, dan adjektifa. Sedangkan sebagai sufiks pembentuk nomina, -some bisa
melekat pada bentuk kombinasi, prefiks, dan nomina. Elemen-element yang
menjadi lekatan sufiks –some berfungsi sebagai kata dasar dan kata dasar ini
bisa merupakan akar kata yang bersifat bebas atau pun terikat. Selain itu, hasil
penelitian juga memperlihatkan adanya produktifitas makna yang tidak regular
terhadap kata-kata yang dianalisis karena dipengaruhi konteks.
