ABSTRAK
The Awakening membahas isu tentang wanita dan pernikahan. Dalam novel
ini, Kate Chopin menunjukkan bahwa budaya patriaki dalam masyarakat Creole,
yang menjadi latar belakang cerita dari novel ini, begitu banyak memberikan tekanan
serta beban kepada wanita terutama kepada wanita yang terikat dalam pernikahan.
Dalam menganalisis novel ini, penulis menggunakan pendekatan feminis, khususnya
“Gynocriticism”, perempuan sebagai penulis, yang dikemukan oleh Elaine Showalter.
Setelah melakukan analisis, penulis menemukan bahwa Kate Chopin mencoba
menyampaikan kritiknya terhadap budaya patriaki di Amerika Selatan yang terlalu

menekan perempuan. Chopin melihat bahwa lembaga pernikahan memperlakukan
istri sebagai hak milik dan kemudian memenjarakan kehidupan sang istri. Upaya
untuk melepaskan diri dari semua pengekangan tersebut, Chopin menawarkan
kematian sebagai kebebesan mutlak bagi karakter utama dari novel ini, Edna
Pontellier.
Kata Kunci : “Gynocritics”, budaya Patriaki, Kebebasan Individu
