ABSTRACT

  This research was conducted to analyze the deletion technique applied in movie subtitle entitled Kingdom of Heaven. The research objectives are 1) to analyze linguistic units which experienced deletion technique, 2) to analyze the nature of deletion technique, and 3) to analyze the effect toward the quality of translation.

  The research is adopted descriptive qualitative method. The data for the study are categorized into two types: linguistic and translation data. Linguistic data refers to the linguistic unit which experienced deletion technique. Translation data refers to the nature of deletion technique and the translation quality assessment. The linguistic data are taken by analyzing and comparing English and Indonesian subtitle then noted the data which contains deletion technique. The translation data were obtained from the raters through the focus group discussion. The result of the data analysis shows that there are 71 data experienced deletion technique. From the research findings shows that: 1) There are 21 words (29,6%) experienced deletion technique; 8 phrases (11,3%) experienced deletion technique; 12 clauses (16,9%) experienced deletion technique; and 30 sentences (42,2%) experienced deletion technique. 2) There are 64 (90.15%) data can be categorized as optional deletion; 7 (9.85%) data can be categorized as obligatory deletion. 3) The translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability shows that the accuracy score is 1,4, the acceptability score is 2,2, the readability score is 2,2. Therefore the total translation quality is 1,8 it is categorized as low-quality translation.

  From the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there are 71 data found word 21 data, phrase 8 data, clause 12 data, and sentence 30 data. The nature of deletion technique shows that 64 data which are optional deletion and 7 data which are obligatory data. The total of quality translation of this study is low with the score 1,8. The researcher suggests tot the translators to keep the consistency of their works.
