ABSTRACT
The title of this study is American Slang in “Horrible Bosses 2” Movie by
Anders and John Morris. The aims of the study are to identify the function of
slang found in the movie titled Horrible Bosses 2. Besides, this study also
analyzes the meaning of slang applied by the characters in the movie Horrible
Bosses 2.
The data of this study were collected from the movie entitled The Horrible
Bosses 2 as the data source. The theory used is the theory of language function
proposed by Holmes (2010) was used to identify the function of slang. In
addition, the theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1974) in order to analyze the
meaning of slang. The documentation method was used to collect the data from
the movie. The technique of collecting data was done in several steps; watching
the movie, downloading and reading the movie script carefully to find out the
slang words, finally the data were ready to analyze in related theory and
qualitative method was used to analyze the data.
The result of the analysis shows that there are six functions of slang found
in this study they are: expressive function, directive function, referential function,
metalinguistic function, poetic function and phatic function. The expressive

function is dominantly found in the utterances. Meanwhile, there are six meaning
of slang found in this study, namely: conceptual meaning, connotative meaning,
reflected meaning, stylistic meaning, affective meaning, collocative meaning and
thematic meaning.
