  SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE Question 21 Question 21(a) The answers must be precise and appropriate to the responses taking consideration of the graphic.

  Example of Excellent Answer 1: The response that was given were accurate. Example of Excellent Answer 2: The respons that was given was accurate and polite. Example the usage of the phrase “Excuse me”.

  Example of Average Answer 1: The response given was appropriate but had grammatical and punctuation errors.

  Example omission of the word “is and question mark.” Example of Average Answer 2: Spoken language was used in the response and the element of politeness is missing. Question 21(b) Example of Excellent Answer 1: The language structure implies a perfect command of proficiency.

  Example of Excellent Answer 2: The sentence structure is correct without errors. Example of Average Answer 1: The meaning of the response was understood but one error of word usage. Also there are errors in tenses and omission of verbs. Example the word

  “borrow”. Example of Average Answer 2: The response was understood but there was a spelling error and omission of verb. The word

  “dentist “is wrongly spelled and omission of verb “go”.

  Question 21(c) Example of Excellent Answer 1: Answer is written in polite manner, applying the moral values (politeness) instilled in the syllabus.

  Example of Excellent Answer 2: The answer is correctly stated without errors. It has fulfilled the requirement of the question perfectly.

  Example of Average Answer 1: The response was correct but due to spelling error and wrong usage of preposition the meaning was distorted. Example the word

  “aunty” and “with.” Example of Average Answer 2: The response was correct but due to wrong usage of word the meaning was distorted.

  Example the word found should be to speak to.

  Question 22 Question 22(a) These were choice questions with only one correct response needed.

  Example of Excellent Answer: Question 22 (b) Example of Excellent Answer: These were choice questions with only one correct response needed. Question 22 (c) This is a subjective question and the response should be taken from the non- linear text fulfilling the task of the question.

  Example of Excellent Answer 1: The answer had correct content and structure. Example of Excellent Answer 2: The answer had correct content and structure.

  Example of Average Answer 1: The response had major structural errors but it fulfilled the task of the question. Example

  Question 22 (d) The required answer should reflect a knowledge in vocabulary which could be comprehended from the text.

  Example of Excellent Answer: Question 22(e) The response should be justified with reasons generated from the candidates point of view as this is a HOTS question.

  Example of Excellent Answer 1: The response was justified with logical answers without grammatical errors. The sentence written by the candidate fulfilled the requirement of the question.

  Example of Excellent Answer 2: The response was justified with logical answers and elaborated with correct sentences. Example of Average Answer 1: The opinion given is not a valid reason to be justified.

  Example “ the reservation date will not be close” Example of Average Answer 2: The answer did not fulfill the task as it was directly lifted from the text. Example

  Question 23(c) The candidates should be able to comprehend the content in the text to fulfill the task. Example of Excellent Answer: Candidate understands the question well and can link the answers from list A and list B correctly.

  Question 23(d) The reason must be justified logically.

  Example of Excellent Answer 1: The justification was elaborated precisely portraying a good command in language. Example of Excellent Answer 2: The justification was well elaborated using t he candidates’ own ideas with good sentence structures. Example “My house is near KL Sentral, so I can go to Ipoh by train”.

  Example of Average Answer 1: The reason was a statement without justification. The answer for the first part of the question is correct but failed to provide a clear reason.

  Example of an Average Answer 2 The answer given was with illogical reasoning. Example

  “the smoke of the taxi will be air pollution”.

  Question 23(e) The response should be relevant to the choices made by the candidates. Example of Excellent Answer 1: The reasons given were elaborated with good sentence structures without errors and were relevant.

  Example of Excellent Answer 2: The reasons given were elaborated with good sentence structures using comparisons.

  Example the word “fastest”.

  Example of Average Answer 1: Proper reasoning was not displayed due to poor elaboration and grammatical errors. In this case, two verbs is used in one sentence,

  “is” and “go”.

  Example of Average Answer 2: The answer reflects more to spoken language with grammatical errors. Example

  “no people push or knock them”.

  Question 24 and 25

  Question 24(a) These were choice questions with only one correct response needed. Example of Excellent Answer: The candidate could tick (/) correctly as the could understand the dialogue and the content of the text.

  Question 24(b) These were choice questions with only one correct response needed.

  Example of Excellent Answer: The candidate could tick (/) correctly as the could understand the dialogue and the content of the text.

  Question 25(a) Candidates need to refer to the text to derive the answers concisely. Example of Excellent Answer 1: The candidate is able to write the answers correctly without spelling mistake.

  Question 25(b) The response should be opinion based and relevant justifying the candidates ’ point of view.

  Example of Excellent Answer 1: The response was justified with relevant answers correctly. The candidate could answer the first stem correctly and identify the correct sentence to support the first answer.

  Example of Excellent Answer 2: The response was justified with relevant answers with the used of correct grammar.

  E.g. i) subject verb agreement ii) singular and plural.

  Example of Average Answer 1: The response given was unclear due to grammatical and structural errors. Example “did not people to clean their class”.

  Example of Average Answer 2: The response given had grammatical and punctuation errors. Example capital “T “and omission of “is” Question 25(c)

  The candidates’ response should be derived by making logical judgements based on the statement given.

  Example of Excellent Answer 1: The elaboration was clear and logic. The candidate provides good answer with logical reason.

  Example of Excellent Answer 2: The elaboration was written clearly and the reasoning was in detail. The candidate constructs a compound sentence.

  Example of Average Answer 1: The reason given was irrelevant and did not justify the answer. Example

  “help mother to clean home” Example of Average Answer 2: The candidate agrees with the statement but failed to give a reason.

  SUGGESTIONS FOR PUPILS

  1. Candidates must be well versed in grammar and language usage to improve the quality of writing.

  2. Need to read a variety of English materials to enrich their vocabulary to be able to express themselves clearly.

  3. Spelling need to be mastered. Incorrect spelling changes the meaning of the word or sentence thus making it harder for the reader to understand the content.

  SUGGESTIONS FOR TEACHERS 1.

  Check pupils’ work thoroughly, identify their errors and discuss the errors with them.

  2. Give more written practice in comprehension skills.

  3. Encourage candidates to read widely.

  4. Train pupils to identify the need of the question before answering.

  5. Give more listening and speaking activities to encourage them to give proper responses.
