Abstract
The development of suppty chain management (SCM) concept is al.n.ays engaged

with international large_
size company. Nevertheless, it is realized that today's global competitiie market
will affect- not only
internationallv large-sized companies but also small-mediim sized companies. Therefore,
iis paper aims
to get knowledge of the understanding of SCM concept by lhe cotnpani'es as well
as ihe adoption'of SCM
concept by small companies. The case studies on small companies located in Jogjakarra'are
exlmined.
Empirical Jlndings showed that all the studied companies confirmed that the.v ie unfamiliar
wirh rhe
terntinolog,' of supply chain management; however, one of the studiecl companiei has
beei implemented the
concept of supply chc;in managemenl concept. It is also
found that thi barriers lowards'SCM concept
adoption are lhe resistance to change, simple operations and limited burlget. The paper
suggests that
ulthough the practitioners have already implemented SCM concept, thqv need a 'betlerZntceptual
underslanding of it and new and more svstematic approaches

ln most developing countries. srnall companies. in rvhich lraemented and large in number. plav

very significant role in economic growth. Small companies are rnore likel,r to be libor-intensive.
They

provide.iob opportunities and create rvealth. In this sense. they brin,e more balanced grorvth
of the regional
economy and equity in income distribution.
In today's' world competition. companies are no longer competing in isolation of their partners.
The competition is not among manufacturers but among the supply chain. b-eyond their
own organizations.
For that reason' the interest cn new concept, supply chain *unug"r.nt. has been increased
slnce l9g0s.
Such approach has been applied widely in diverse industries. Hor"euer, the development
of supply chain
management (SCM) concept is usually engaged with international large-size company
,truggiing ,o
coordinate internal information and materials. Nevertheless. it is realizedlhat today's gloiui

market will afl'ect not only internationally large-sized companies but also small-sizedionipanies.
Compared with those of large companies. that approach could be applied diiferently between
management activities in large-sized manufacturing and those in small sized manufbcturing.
Therefore, this
paper aims to get knowledge on how supply chain management concept is adopted
by"small cornpanies
particularly in Jogiakarta, Indoensia.
This article is organized into fbur parts. The first part explores the various deflnition on
supply
chain rnanagement concept offered in past several years as rvell as the reasoning on the increase
interest on
supply chain. The second part is the research methodolog-'- describing on horv the research
had been carried
out' The third part is the case studies on three small companies. Ii presents case study descriptions
and
explores the company's profile ot'studied cornpanies as rrell as the main characteristics
of'srnall companies.
The fbrth part. analysis and discussions, is exploring the meaning oISCM understood
by,respondent, in tn.
studied companies, current business practices anrl cross .o*lun1, anal."-sis. The lait part presents
the
summary and the possibility of future work.

Literature Review
Supply Chain Management Definition

There are burgeoning literatures that discuss the deflnition of supply chain management.
Below are
definitions quoted fiom many literatures. The APICS Dictionary describes-the supply chain
as (Cox et al..

linking across supplier user companies; and

the functions within and outside a company that enable the value chain to make products and
provide services to the customer

According to the supply chain council, supply chain management encompasses every effort
involved in producing and delivering a final product or service, from the suppliers' suppliei to the
customers' customer. SCM inctudes managing supply and demand, sourcing raw material and parts,
manufacturing and assembly. warehousing and inventory, tracking, order entry and order management.
distribution across all channel and delivery to the customers.
According to Stanford Supply Chain Forum, SCM deals with the management of materials,
information and flnancial florvs in a netrvork consisting of supplier, manufacturers, distributors and

customers.

Quinn (1997) defines the supply chain as "all of those activities associated with moving goods
from the raw-materials stage through to the end user. This includes sourcing and procurement. production
scheduling. order processing. inventory management. transportation, warehousing. and customer service.
Importantly. it also embodies the infbrmation systems so necessary to monitor all of'those actii'ities."
Further, Monczka and Morgan (1997) state that "integrated supply chain rnanagement is abut
going f'rom the external customer and then managing all the processes that are needed to provide the
customer with value in a horizontal rvav."
