Background of the Analysis

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Analysis

Language has a great position in human life, because language can be defined as a way to utter our feeling and meaning. Language is therefore a system by which sounds and meanings are related Rodman 1974:2. Human always use language in words form and combine it into a sentence. A linguistic works that studies about combine words in to sentence is called syntax. Syntax is the analysis of constructions that involve only free forms, Bloch and Trager 1942:71, or more over syntax is the study of the patterns by which word are combined to make sentences. Stryker 1969:21. By the all definition and theory that has showed before, it can conclude that syntax is a branch of grammatical that studies about structure of sentences, phrase and clause. As Tarigan says in his book about sentence, “Kalimat adalah satuan bahasa yang secara relatif dapat berdiri sendiri, yang mempunyai pola intonasi akhir dan yang terdiri dari klausa.” Tarigan 1984:5. It means that sentence is a unity of words that can stand alone as relative, that has intonation pattern and consist of clause. In this thesis, I only discuss and analyze about clause. Universitas Sumatera Utara A clause is syntagm having typically a subject and predicate and possibly complement to these segments A period such as sit down would also consist of a clause although no segment which could be called a subject is present Goran 1976:58. Further Cook added A clause is a group of words that forms part of sentence and that contains a subject and a predicate, Cook 1971:65 According to Chaer 1994:231 “Klausa adalah satuan sintaksis berupa runtunan kata-kata berkonstruksi predikatif.” It means that in that construction there is a component, like word or phrase, that has a function as predicate; and the other as subject, object and complement. Based on the distribution of the unit, clause can be classified into two parts; those are dependent clause and independent clause. An independent clause is complete in itself, whereas dependent clause is necessarily related to an independent clause and dependent clause always started by a conjunction, Downing 1995:11. This is illustrated in: They have locked up the house, before they went for a holiday. Independent clause : They have locked up the house, Dependent clause : before they went for a holiday Independent clause has two parts that consist of, verbal clause and nonverbal clause. Same with independent clause, dependent clause has many parts inside. There are noun clause, adjectival clause and adverbial clause. These are the categories of the clauses that I want to analyze. In this thesis, the newspaper is used as the object of the analysis. Newspaper is a media that give some information by using some interesting Universitas Sumatera Utara sentences and making the reader wonder to read it. The newspaper that used as the object of the analysis is The Jakarta Post daily newspaper. The reasons for chosing the neswpaper as the object of the analysis are: 1. The Jakarta Post is written in English 2. The Jakarta Post is written by Indonesian people and the reporters are not native speakers too. As an Indonesian people we have our mother tongue and national language as working languages. English is the third language that Indonesian people use. 3. In The Jakarta Post, the sentences found are used to be long and maybe made an ambiguity. 4. In The Jakarta Post, I find sentences that used in this newspaper are too long and have more than one clause. Example: The club’s assistant manager Mark Bowen told the BBC that a deal was very close, but an Arabian business website insisted that talks had broken down Sport Article Page 24 in The Jakarta Post. These sentences consist of four clauses they are: 1. The club’s assistant manager Mark Bowen told the BBC 2. but an Arabian business website insisted 3. that a deal was very close 4. that talks had broken down. Gathering the data from the newspaper, there are many articles that found in the newspaper, but I only utilize sport and the political articles from The Jakarta Post newspaper 1 st -7 th September 2009.
